Nokia to launch 10 new Symbian smartphones in next 12 months

Jun 21, 2011 (NORDIC BUSINESS REPORT via COMTEX) -- 21 June 2011 - Finnish mobile-phone maker Nokia Oyj (HEL: NOK1V) plans to launch 10 new Symbian-based smartphones over the next year, while working on the transition to the Windows Phone platform, the company said on Tuesday.

At the Nokia Connection event held today in Singapore, Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop confirmed that the company would support and develop the Symbian platform until 2016.

In July, Nokia plans to start shipping the models N8s, E7s, C7s and C6-01s with the updated Symbian software, Symbian Anna.

In addition to three new Series 40-based models in the lower-price segment -- C2-02, C2-03 and C2-06 -- the Finnish company also revealed a new smartphone, Meego-based N9. This came as a surprise for the market, which had expected Nokia to announce its first Windows Phone 7-based device under the cooperation with US software giant Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT).

"I am now more certain that we will be able to present a first mobile phone (based on Microsoft's Windows Phone platform) later this year," Elop said, cited by Swedish newswire Nyhetsbyran Direkt.
