Cranfield University Honours Key Industry and Business Professionals(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CRANFIELD, England, June 10 -- Cranfield University issued the following news release: Cranfield University will bestow eight honorary degrees on distinguished industry and business figures during this year's graduation ceremonies held over the next two days on campus. The Honorary Graduates are recognised for their major influences in the sectors that Cranfield specialises in including; manufacturing, management, health and engineering. Each representative will receive a Doctor of Science (DSc) from each of the University's Schools. Professor Sir John O'Reilly, Cranfield University Vice-Chancellor, said: "Each Honorary Cranfield Graduate has been specially selected for their outstanding contribution to the science, technology and management sectors in which Cranfield works. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them and all the students who have worked tirelessly to be part of the graduation ceremonies." School of Engineering: * Thomas Enders, Chief Executive Officer of Airbus - Thomas Enders, CEO of Airbus since 2007, studied Economics, Political Science and History at the University of Bonn and at theUniversity of California in Los Angeles. Prior to joining the aerospace industry in1991 (Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm), heworked as a member of the Planning Staff of the German Minister of Defence. At MBB and - subsequently - DASA, he held various positions, including Chief ofStaff, Director Corporate Development and Technology, and Head of Defence Systems. Following the creation of EADS in 2000, hewas appointed CEO of the EADS Defenceand Security Systems Division, holding this position until 2005 when he was appointedCo-CEO of EADS. * Zuoming Lin, President of AVIC - Following successive positions as Presidentand Chairman in two large state-owned enterprises in southwest and northeast China, Zuoming Lin was appointed Vice- President, then President of AVIC I (China Aviation Industry Corporation I). He is now President of AVIC (Aviation Industry Corporation of China).Mr Lin graduated from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1982, majoring in engine design. He received his PhD in management science and engineering from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2006. He is a PhD supervisor at universities such as Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Xiamen University, and published many books and articles about aero-engines, economics and management. A recipient of the Special State Allowance, he has received many awards, the most recent being the top grade of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology. School of Applied Sciences: * Dr Liz Goodwin, Chief Executive Officer of WRAP - Since Dr Liz Goodwin became CEO for WRAP, both the organisation's profile andthe issues of waste and recycling haveincreased significantly through coverage in the press, on TV and on radio. Under her leadership, the Courtauld commitment involving the major retailers,brands and their supply chains has beendriven forward; food waste is being tackled, and the Construction Commitments: HalvingWaste to Landfill, launched in 2008, are being rolled out with support from within the construction industry and at Defra and BIS.Recently described as 'The first lady of UK recycling', Liz has worked with WRAP sinceits early days, joining in 2001 as its first Director of Materials Programmes. A chemist with a PhD in chemical physics,Liz held several technical and production related roles within ICI and Zeneca before moving into the environmental field withinthe chemical industry. * Gerard Mestrallet, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GDF SUEZ - Gerard Mestrallet heads the world's second largest utility - French-based energy company GDF SUEZ, formed by the merger of Gaz de France and Suez in 2008. An aeronautics engineer by training, Gerard graduated from the French engineering school Polytechnique in 1968, then went on to earn a degree from the National School of Administration. Known as a steady and reliable manager, he joined Compagnie de Suez to serve as Vice President of Special Projects in 1984, working his way up through the ranks and becoming Chairman and CEO in 1995. His bold choice to change Suez's focus shortly after taking over began its transformation from a marginal financial company into a profitable water, gas, and electric provider, active in electricity generation and distribution, natural gas and renewable energy. Cranfield Health: * Professor David R Harper, Director General for Health Improvement and Protection, Department of Health Professor David R Harper, Director General for Health Improvement and Protection, is primarily responsible for protecting the public from the risks posed by infectious disease and environmental hazards. Also part of his remit is international health and scientific development; reducing the burden of conditions associated with poor lifestyles; promoting health and wellbeing; and preparedness for a range of possible health emergencies and disruptive challenges to UK health services. Now Chief Scientist and Head of Profession for scientists in the Department of Health, he was formerly Director General of Health Protection, International Health and Scientific Development. A scientist by training, David's disciplines are microbiology and biochemistry. He was Head of the Microbiology Unit at the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory before joining the Department of Health, and has held several science policy posts in areas such as dangerous pathogens, biotechnology, food safety, toxicology and radiation. Cranfield School of Management: * Ruth Spellman OBE, Chief Executive of the Chartered Management Institute - As CE of the Chartered Management Institute, Ruth Spellman leads the drive to encourage greater focus on the high-level skills needed to build UK competitiveness and productivity. She is also responsible for the Institute's campaign to ensure 50% of managers are professionally qualified by 2020. Before joining the institute in June 2008,Ruth was the first woman CE of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. She also spent seven years as CEO of Investors in People UK, where she helped raise the profile of the employer-led organisation, and spent five years at Coopers and Lybrand where she set up one of the firm's HR branches. As HR Director for the NSPCC, Ruth's consultancy knowledge and strength resulted in new NSPCC policies which helped them to win the Employer of the Year Award in 1996. * Bill Thomas, Former EDS General Manager for Europe - Now retired, Bill Thomas led the EDS Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) business for the last seven years, most recently as Executive Vice President and a member of the EDS Executive Committee. Subsequently, as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the region for Hewlett- Packard Enterprise Services - the former EDS - he was responsible for the successful merger and restructuring of EDS with HP's European outsourcing business. Bill began his career as a consultant and project manager and, with over 28 years of experience in IT services, he is an authority in IT-enabled business transformation and programme and change management. An MBA alumnus of Cranfield School of Management, where he now chairs the International Advisory Board, he holds a BSc with honours in mathematics from Leeds University, an MSc in digital systems from Brunel University, and an honorary DSc from the City University, London. Cranfield School of Management Distinguished Alumnus Award: * Andrew James Bond, Chairman, Asda Executive Committee - Cranfield alumnus Andy Bond was named Chairman of the Asda Executive Committee in April 2010. He was appointed President and CEO of Asda in March 2005 and has been responsible for sharpening Asda's strategic and operational focus and for re-invigorating the top team.He has also recently heralded the dawn of a new era of democratic consumerism with a series of Asda initiatives which place customers at the heart of the business.Andy was educated at Kings Grammar School, Grantham, before studying Engineering at Salford University. He began his career as a graduate trainee at British Gas, before studying for an MBA at Cranfield School of Management. He was awarded Cranfield's Top Student Award that year.His Asda career started as a Marketing Manager in 1994, but he held various positions including COO with responsibility for Retail Operations and Logistics, Managing Director for 'George', and Marketing Director - a position he attained within three years of joining Asda.
