HL:Rogers Wireless to charge for incoming text messages for user not in plans@

(Canadian Press DataFile Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MONTREAL _ Rogers Wireless (TSX:RCI.B) says it will start charging 15 cents for each incoming text for customers who don't have message plans, starting July 7.

Spokewoman Liz Hamilton says Rogers is falling in line with other major carriers in North America, including Bell (TSX:BCE) and Telus (TSX:T), that already levy this kind of charge for text messages.

Hamilton says only a small number of Rogers Wireless customers will be affected because most already have unlimited text messaging in their plans or bundles.

She adds that users won't be charged for spam text messages, and also that users of the discount brand Fido won't be affected.

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association says that 76 million text messages are sent daily in Canada.
