Jackson as president and chief executive of NLC Insurance Cos. when she retires on July 1, 2009. The companies' directors announced the succession plan Tuesday and said Jackson would continue serving on the board after her retirement. The Norwich-based NLC Insurance Cos. consist of New London County Mutual Insurance Co. and Thames Insurance Co. "Steve is a talented executive who possesses a thorough understanding of our business, our strategy and our potential," said Robert T. Ramsdell, chairman of the NLC board of directors, in a statement. "I expect that Steve's experience with NLC will enable him to hit the ground running and that it will be a smooth transition." Chevalier, formerly with PricewaterhouseCoopers, joined NLC as vice president and treasurer eight years ago. In 2003, he was promoted to chief financial officer, and he became a senior vice president in 2006. For the past year and a half, he has served as chief operating officer. Jackson has been president and chief executive of NLC since February 2001, when she took the reins from Ramsdell. In Ramsdell's 23 years at the helm, the company grew more than 10 times, and it now writes between $65 million and $70 million in policies, according to George W. Francis, vice president of marketing. NLC, which has local roots dating back to 1840, has commercial and personal insurance product lines that it offers through independent agencies in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The companies are rated A-minus by A.M. Best Co. Inc., a national organization that rates the creditworthiness of hundreds of firms. "The company is well positioned to take advantage of numerous opportunities that exist in the marketplace," said Ramsdell.
