OKI Develops CenterStage(R) NX3200, the Industry's First Session Border Controller for NGN

TOKYO --(Business Wire)-- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TOKYO:6703) today announced it is the first in the industry to develop a session border controller(1) for next generation networks (NGN). OKI's "CenterStage(R) NX3200" will be available in Japan starting today.

"Telecom carriers will start providing triple play service for voice, video and data to tens of millions of telephone subscribers over NGNs. In such an environment, carriers need to connect with other carriers to transfer services and provide a ubiquitous environment, enabling users to access services whenever and wherever they desire," said Kichiro Akino, President of Network Systems Company at Oki Electric Industry. "CenterStage NX3200 enables carriers to interconnect their networks which hadn't been done in the past because it was difficult to process large capacity traffic in high speed with different IPs such as IPv4 to IPv6. In addition, the development of such system was delayed because there were no frameworks to flexibly interconnect higher-level services. Going forward, OKI will continue to release various products to expand functionality, thus effectively responding to the needs of telecom customers."

OKI succeeded in overcoming the challenge of processing at high-speed while ensuring high expandability, using the "CenterStage HAPF(2)" as its middleware platform. In addition, OKI was able to flexibly interconnect higher-level services using AdvancedTCA(R)(3) communications servers from Motorola and network processing technologies.

"Motorola is delighted that OKI has adopted our Centellis(TM) 3000 series ATCA(R) communications server in their session border controller CenterStage NX3200," said Stephen Dow, vice president and general manager, Embedded Communications Computing, Motorola, Inc. "This is further evidence of the increased acceptance of open, standards-based communications servers as a common platform for a wide range of applications. In our communications servers, Motorola verifies thermal, power and mechanical operation of the hardware and integrates a standard Carrier Grade Linux distribution, comprehensive centralized platform management and high-availability fabric management in an SA Forum compliant platform. We look forward to continuing our success with OKI's deployment of exciting new products based on Motorola's ATCA communications servers."

(Glossary)

(1) Session border controller:

A controller to interconnect networks between IP multimedia subsystems (IMS). It can connect with different carriers' IMS networks and terminals by absorbing the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) differences and by conducting media conversion.

(2) CenterStage HAPF:

A middleware platform to ensure high reliability for OKI's CenterStage NX Series. With a duplex server and a function to ensure reliability, the middleware achieves an operating rate of 99.9999%, a high level of availability equivalent to a central office.

(3) AdvancedTCA (Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture)

This is an industry standard for NGN telecom equipment for telecom carriers, established by PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG). AdvancedTCA includes technology advantages with high processing capacity and I/O expandability, while enabling reduction in development costs and flexibility with its open standards.

About Motorola's Communications Servers

Motorola's communications servers are open, fully integrated systems that act as a common, carrier-grade platform for a wide range of applications. This common platform concept integrates hardware and software elements to enable equipment manufacturers to focus on adding their application-specific value, thereby reducing the time, cost and risk involved in deploying new revenue-generating applications or migrating existing applications to standards-based technology.
