BRITAIN/INTERNATIONAL: Iran rejects cartoon rap

(Daily Post (Liverpool) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)IRAN last night rejected US and Danish accusations it had inflamed and encouraged violent protests over caricatures of Islam's Prophet Mohammed and demanded an apology, saying it could reduce growing tension.

Iran was responding to comments by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who said: "Iran and Syria have gone out of their way to inflame sentiments and to use this to their own purposes."

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi singled out Rice's comments and also said Denmark should apologise.

He spoke a day before one of Iran's largest newspapers is to launch a contest seeking caricatures of the Holocaust.

Most people in Britain believe newspapers were right to publish the cartoons of the prophet Mohammed which have sparked violent protests by Muslims across the globe, according to a You Gov poll.
