Obituaries(The Greenville News)Violet F. Bagwell Laurens Violet Foster Wood Bagwell, 83, of 606 Ranch Road, widow of Fred Bagwell, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2005, at Laurens County Hospital. Born in Union, she was a daughter of the late John J. and Hester Lockhart Foster. She retired from J.P. Stephens Watts Plant after 42 years of service and was currently employed with the Laurens County Hospital in the Dietary Department. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church and the Ruth Casey Sunday School Class. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Nancy Wood of Laurens; two grandchildren, Brian Wood and wife, Elaine, and Jessica Wood; and a great-grandchild, Madilyn Wood. She was predeceased by three brothers, J.C. Foster, Ottis Foster, and Wilson Foster; and three sisters, Lillian Belue, Ruby Pitts, and Frances Davis. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 23, 2005, at St. James United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charlie Short, with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late John Franklin and Janie McJunkin Bailey. Mr. Bailey retired from Wangner Systems and was a member of Victory Chapel Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Elloree High School and Clemson College Class of 1964. He owned Bookhart Farms and Elloree Realty. He was elected to the Elloree Town Council 1977-1979 and served as mayor pro tem. He was elected mayor in 1979 and served through 1988. While serving as mayor, the town received Gov. Richard Riley's' GREAT Town designation and also successfully recruited a Food Lion Distribution Center. He was elected by the General Assembly to the S.C. Highway Commission and served as vice chairman 1990-1991 and chairman 1991-1992. In 2001 and in November 2005, he was again elected mayor of Elloree. Prior to this, he had served as municipal judge. In 1979, he was the youngest member ever elected to the board of directors of South Carolina Electric and Gas (now SCANA) and was the longest-serving member. He served on all committees of the board during his tenure and was presently serving on the Nuclear Oversight Committee, the Human Resources Committee and as chairman of the Nominating and Governance Committee. Mr. Bookhart was a founder and chairman of the board of Elloree Academy. He formerly served on the Selective Service Board of Orangeburg County and the 278th Military Intelligence Unit, U.S. Army Reserve, Aiken, S.C. He was a past member of the Elloree Lions, Elloree Jaycees and Knights of Pythias, serving as grand chancellor. He was a member of Elloree First Baptist Church. Mr. Bookhart was an avid outdoorsman, golfer and hunter and was a sponsor member of the National Wild Turkey Federation. He was an avid Clemson fan and an IPTAY Representative for Clemson University. Mr. Harold Benjamin "Ben" Burrell Jr., age 53, of Cornelius, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at University Hospital. Born May 24, 1952, in Charlotte, he was the son of Margaret Hawkins Goodman of Cornelius and the late Harold B. Burrell Sr. Ben was a member of Rock Christian Church of Charlotte and was owner of The Z Shop of Atlanta from 1978 to 1998. After moving from Atlanta, Ben was employed at ESI as lead driving instructor for BMW Performance Center in Greer S.C. He loved auto racing, golf and baseball. Sr. and Clara Mae Lowe Clark. He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church and was a computer technician with Greenville Technical College. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Helen Frances Griffin Dobson, 81, died Nov. 22, 2005, in Raleigh, N.C., of complications from a stroke. Mrs. Dobson was born in Six Mile, S.C., the oldest of four children of Irene and Sarge Griffin of Central, S.C. After graduating from Central High School, Helen attended Anderson College. For several years, she worked in various administrative positions. Mrs. Dobson then enjoyed many years as an Army officer's wife. She was fortunate to live in interesting places, i.e. Jordan, Israel, Syria and Germany. During these years, she enjoyed traveling throughout the Middle East and Europe. Upon retirement in Raleigh, N.C., Mrs. Dobson was an active volunteer as a "Pink Lady" and with North Raleigh United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband of 46 years, William C. "Bill" Dobson Jr., (Colonel, U.S. Army Retired); a daughter, Barbara Dua and husband, Douglas Harton, of Albuquerque, N.M.; a granddaughter, Kimberly Beavers and husband, Kevin Drexel, of Asheville, N.C.; a grandson, Ashley J. He was an active volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America for more than 50 years. He was awarded the Silver Beaver, the highest honor in Boy Scouting. He retired as a salesman with the Sullivan Hardware Co. A 1966 graduate of Spartanburg High School, she was a retired purchasing agent with Plastic Injectors. Radcliffe, 85, formerly of North Charleston, S.C., died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005. Born on April 11, 1920, in Bishopville, S.C., he was a son of the late Henry J. and Mary Elizabeth Clark Radcliffe. Mr. Radcliffe served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard, after 40 years, as a rigger, on nuclear submarines. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of North Charleston, where he taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. He served as a deacon and was involved in many other activities within the church. He was also a member of Overbrook Baptist Church, for two years, in Greenville, S.C., where he attended the Hubert Nolin Sunday School Class. Preceding him in death was a son, Mark Stanley Radcliffe; a grandson, Craig Walters; two brothers, Hebron and Ralph Radcliffe; and a sister, Myrtle Catoe. Born in New York City, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Tully McKim. She was a homemaker and also a retired employee from Fedco Stores in Lakewood, Calif. She was of the Catholic faith. Known to all as "Mimi", she had a great sense of humor and loved cooking for her family. A native of Greer, she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Alma Johnson Wood, was a member of Woods Chapel United Methodist Church and was a retired employee of Homelite. Surviving are a sister, Geraldine W. Jones of Greer; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Woods Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Clarence Pittman and the Rev. Richard McAlister. The family is at the home.
