Interest Soaring in VoWLAN/Cellular Combo Phones According to In-Stat

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. --(Business Wire)-- May 3, 2005 -- In the last year, interest in phones that combine cellular and VoIP using WLAN technology has grown at a fevered pitch, according to consumer surveys by In-Stat (http://www.in-stat.com). A large percentage, 84.6%, of respondents in a new survey were at least somewhat interested in the prospect of using a VoWLAN/Cellular phone, and exactly half of these respondents were very interested or extremely interested in the prospects of such a phone.

"With results like this, it's very easy to see why carriers are very actively working to get the VoWLAN/Cellular phone concept deployed," said Allen Nogee, In-Stat analyst. "Cellular carriers are also excited about the prospects of VoWLAN/Cellular handsets because the devices allow them to effectively compete with wireline carriers by providing communications services to enterprise, small business, and home customers via a route other than cellular."

A recent report by In-Stat found the following:

-- Better in-building coverage and the prospect of being able to make unlimited local calls while at home had the biggest importance to survey participants.

-- PBX-type features and the need to only carry one phone at work, home, or elsewhere received very positive responses, but nowhere as high as free local calling at home or better in-building coverage.

-- The survey gives some credence to the ability of cellular carriers to potentially displace wire-line carriers.

The report, "Consumer Demand for VoWLAN/Cellular Combo Handsets" (#IN0502108WH), covers a survey of 860 cellular phone users conducted to find out how they would rate various benefits of a VoWLAN/Cellular handset. The report includes a worldwide forecast for VoWLAN/Cellular handsets through 2010.
