What's New: El Paseo Walgreens to open in October(Las Cruces Sun-News (NM) (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 29--LAS CRUCES -- The Walgreens store on El Paseo Road does not have an opening date yet, but it should be open in time to sell some Halloween candy. Company spokeswoman Carol Hively with the corporate office in Deerfield, Ill., told me that the store will probably open in early October. The store will replace the current Walgreens location at 1300 El Paseo Road. Hively reports that the new store will be 16,900 square feet, with a drive-thru pharmacy window, photofinishing department and liquor department. The company also plans to open a store on Picacho Avenue, near the corner of Motel Boulevard, in 2009 and another one on East Lohman Avenue, just past Dion's, around the same time. The company reports on its Web site, www.walgreens.com, that it has nearly 6,400 stores. There are 54 in New Mexico. Fountain Theatre renovations start Chris Biad and his wife Anna Emerick-Biad bought the Fountain Theatre in Mesilla last year. Biad said that some work on the building has begun. "We've actually started to renovate the place," he said. "It's still being leased to the film society; they're great tenants." The Mesilla Valley Film Society shows films at the historic location -- it's the oldest movie house in the state -- and last year, when the building was put up for sale, the nonprofit was concerned it might lose its venue. Biad said no one knows the future, but he is happy to have the society as tenants. "There's actually four more years to go on their lease," he said. NMSU prof to hold chair in his honor Former New Mexico State University student Brad Gordon has helped the school create a new chair in marketing. It is called the Robin T. Peterson Endowed Chair in Marketing and, fittingly enough, the first holder will be Peterson himself. The Peterson chair was created when Gordon donated 10,000 shares of Celgene stock, valued at more than $500,000, to the College of Business. The chair received matching funds from the state, bringing the total endowment to more than $1 million. Earnings from the endowment are used to support the salary of the faculty member holding the chair, as well as program development and other needs. Gordon earned a degree in marketing from NMSU in 1978. After finishing school, he worked in venture capital and then turned to launching several companies in tandem with other entrepreneurs. Since 1981, Gordon has been involved in the startup of 11 companies, mostly in the biotech field. Dairy Queen on Valley Drive closes In case you missed the news last week, the Dairy Queen located at 1290 S. Valley Drive, closed its doors after the final shift on Aug. 23. Owner Mike Apodaca, who along with his wife Jeannette, also owns a Dairy Queen at 2601 N. Main St., said the business has closed and the property is scheduled to be sold. The North Main store will remain open, he said. There is also a Dairy Queen at 1773 E University Ave., that is owned by Harry Hatch. Called Dairy Queen Brazier Pan Am, Hatch said the restaurant, which is near New Mexico State University, has been open for 28 years and will remain that way. As for the store on Valley Drive, Apodaca said he did not want to be specific about the reasons he will sell the store, but said, "there were multiple issues that were the driving force to sell the real estate."
