Ursec to define digital TV standard this year

(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Uruguayan telecoms regulator Ursec plans to decide this year which digital TV standard to use in the country, local newspaper La Repblica quoted Ursec general manager Juan Piaggio as saying.

To start placing the topic on the table, Ursec is organizing a technical seminar on the matter, which is expected to take place on International Telecommunications Day, May 17.

Piaggio said Ursec has created a technical group, including engineers, economists and lawyers, who will analyze all aspects of digital television to determine the best way to implement the technology in the country.

Brazil is also analyzing which standard to use for digital TV and is negotiating with the European Union, Japan and the US. Chile has already selected the US standard and Uruguay is most likely to go with the Brazilian choice, according to the report.
