Grant County sheriff leads in amount of contributions [Silver City Sun-News, N.M.](Silver City Sun-News (NM) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) May 23--SILVER CITY -- In what has become one of the most heated races in Grant County, the six candidates running for Grant County sheriff have raised some $27,000 in contributions and spent more than $25,000 in a primary race that will wrap up June 1, according to candidate campaign finance reports. Of the five Democratic Party candidates -- Art Vega, Chris Ponce, Sheriff Raul Villanueva, Mike Jimenez and James Koons -- Villanueva has outraised and outspent more than any of his rivals. Villanueva's report shows that he had almost $8,000 in contributions and has spent more than $9,000 to keep the office to which he was appointed to in September. Villanueva has raised and spent more money on his campaign than any of the 24 candidates in county and state races in Grant County, the reports reveal. Jimenez had the second-highest amount in contributions, with almost $6,000, and he has spent more than $4,500, his reports show. As far as raising contributions, Maurine L. Laney, candidate for magistrate judge 1, held the third top spot out of all candidates with more than $5,000. Laney actually outspent Jimenez by almost $3,000, with her expenditures reaching almost $7,500. Candidates were required to submit campaign finance reports to the New Mexico Secretary of State's office on April 12 and May 10 and must submit another report by Thursday.
