BRIEF: 7,000-pound safe crushes man to death on Duval Street

Sep 09, 2009 (Florida Keys Keynoter - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A 7,000-pound safe being wheeled out of a Key West store fell on the store owner and crushed him to death Tuesday afternoon.

Apparently Andy Gelman, owner of the Jewelry Station at 626 Duval St., was wheeling the safe from inside the business to the curb around 4 p.m., and a piece of plywood was being used as a ramp to get it from the store down to curb level.

The safe, more than 6 feet long and 3 feet wide, toppled, crushing Gelman.

Gelman and his wife Franny opened the Jewelry Station in May 2004. They began working together at a retail jewelry store shortly after their marriage in 1972, the store's Web site says. They moved to the Keys in 2000 from Chicago.
