Boyd campaign contributions double Southerland's [The News Herald, Panama City, Fla.]

(News Herald (Panama City, FL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 24--PANAMA CITY -- For the past two and a half months, Steve Southerland's congressional campaign has been funded most commonly by retirees, and Allen Boyd's bid for reelection by business executives.

A review of campaign finance data from Aug. 5 through Oct. 13 shows a difference between those who donated to the campaigns of Southerland, a Republican new to politics, and Boyd, a seven-term Democratic incumbent in the Second Congressional District race.

The review looked only at occupations listed, so a person who donated multiple times to the campaign could have skewed the results slightly, but likely not enough to change the rankings.

Contributors to Southerland's campaign most often identified themselves as retirees, 109; business owners, 93; and homemakers, 48. They each donated, on average, $922, $762 and $854, respectively, during the reporting period.

Contributors to Boyd's campaign most often identified themselves as some sort of business executive, using titles such as president, chief executive officer, principal or partner, about 90; attorney, 49; and consultant, 38. They each donated, on average, $833, $656 and $614, respectively, during the reporting period.

Through Oct. 13, Southerland's campaign reported earning $1.02 million, less than half of the $2.45 million Boyd's campaign brought in.

Southerland received the majority of his donations from individuals. Itemized donations not from political committees totaled $729,594, as of Oct. 13. That accounts for about 71 percent of total contributions. He received $158,612 from p o l i t i c a l c o m m i t t e e s , including political action committees (PACs), about 15 percent of the total.

Among the donations from PACs are two $10,000 donations, from Every Republican Is Crucial and The Freedom Project.

Boyd received the majority of his donations from political committees, including PACs; he took in $1.67 million from them, about 68 percent of his donations.

He received $773,875 from individuals, about 31 percent of his total.

Boyd received $10,000 in donations from 25 PACs that represent the agriculture industry, communications and liberal groups.

He also received $9,900 in donations from the National Rifle Association's PAC and $3,300 in donations News America Holdings, a PAC of Fox News Channel's parent company, among other donations.

Following is a list of individuals and businesses who donated at least $500 to candidates from Aug. 5 through Oct. 13.
