The benefits that came to sports with blockchain

The term "blockchain" is everywhere nowadays: on the news, in the media, in the ads, and so on. It's so extensive and frequent that nobody even cares to clarify what it means anymore, even though numerous people can't describe the technology in their own words or even understand how it works.

The thing is that blockchain is much more than bitcoin, regardless of your feelings towards it. The early adepts of bitcoins claimed that everybody would use them to get rid of banks and states. Seasoned business people believed bitcoins were just another one-day butterfly, while researchers had quietly explored the new technology behind this and other digital currencies. The research is always welcomed, be it technology or betting, all the latest information about which can be found at the bookmaker-ratings.com.

That technology is called "blockchain," a protocol for exchanging information (currency) over the internet without intermediaries. An information buzz is gradually building around it. It is believed that blockchain can completely change the modern banking sector and the industry as a whole.

How blockchain works

Blockchain is just another database for recording and storing transaction data, copied to every computer participating in the network despite its apparent complexity. For this reason, blockchain is sometimes referred to as a distributed transaction log.

Blockchain data consists of fixed structures, or "blocks," which in turn consist of the following essential parts block header, which includes metadata like a unique checksum, creation time, and reference to a previous block.

The block's content is usually a list of digital assets and commands such as transactions made, transaction volumes, and the addresses of parties to the transactions.

If you have the most recent block, you can access all the previous blocks in the chain. The blockchain database stores the entire transaction history, including all of the digital assets and commands that have been set since the first block was created. Thus, the information in the blockchain is accessible and verifiable at any point in time.

As the number of participants grows, it becomes increasingly difficult for a potential 'spy' to monitor the activities of the entire chain. This feature makes the transaction blockchain a very viable and secure data structure. Indeed, blockchain is planned to protect data from nuclear power plants in the UK, flood warning mechanisms, and other critical infrastructure.

Why blockchain is needed in business

Blockchain is effective in systems where the authorship of any action and reliable data synchronization is essential. These include banks, traditional exchanges, logistics, notaries, certification centres, insurance companies, rating agencies, contests, and lotteries.

It makes it significantly cheaper:

  • financial transactions;
  • document imaging and authentication;
  • identification of users;
  • protection of intellectual property;
  • information storage;
  • maintenance of various registers;
  • business management;
  • crowdfunding campaigns;
  • supply chains;
  • contracting and contract execution.

Blockchain technology protects data from tampering, whether it's election results, winning the lottery, owning a flat, or an insurance claim. Blockchain also lays the foundations for a robot economy. For example, a person can pay directly to a ride-hailing taxi, and the car will spend the money for a routine maintenance checkup.

Why blockchain is needed in sports

Blockchain is used in many different technologies, popular with sports fans. A wide variety of options are available for this category.

  • Fan Tokens. The collectables are a way to invest in your favourite club. Fan Tokens give different advantages for holders, such as discounts, interaction with players, and a chance to partake in the ecosystem. FC Barcelona, Manchester City, and Inter Milan already gave an option to purchase such tokens.
  • NFT. In the sports world, the Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT) are primarily adopted in the form of digital trading cards. The platforms like Socios offer the Fantasy Football-like experience, where after the purchase, you can profit without reselling.
  • Security. Embracement of blockchain is securing the information on both ends. For example, when fans buy tickets, decentralization removes the need for mediators, affecting the price. For athletes, decentralization is excellent, too, since the technology will secure all the information about their contracts, health, and so on.

Key challenges for blockchain

As the ecosystem evolves and new blockchain applications emerge, new problems and challenges will arise that have never been seen before. They include:

  • increasing awareness and understanding of blockchain technology,
  • cost,
  • the efficiency of use,
  • governance and regulation at a governmental level,
  • security and privacy,
  • openness to cultural shifts, including a willingness to cooperate across sectors.
