Why is technology so important in education?

Technology has changed many areas of our lives in ways our ancestors couldn’t even imagine. In fact, some of us still can’t get used to it. However, emerging generations started using technology as early as they learned to walk or even crawl. While children today are surrounded by technology, the educational systems struggle to implement it in the learning processes. Some educators still fear it would be a distraction and remain faithful to traditional teaching methods. But that is a mistake we can’t allow to happen.

In 2020, technology has already become a necessity, not an optional addition. If we don’t make it a part of the educational process, the students will not get an education that would prepare them for their future lives. Since modern technologies are entwined with every major aspect of our lives, it’s important to teach children to use technology not only for entertainment but for practical purposes as well. Besides being an aid in everyday life, technology is also the core of many high paying jobs. Students who learn to use advanced computer technology at an early age are more likely to be qualified for such jobs in the future.

Instead of condemning technology as a distraction, teachers should understand that it is an integral part of the students’ lives and should make it work to their advantage. There are plenty of ways to make students learn with the help of their favorite devices. Since they have such a close relationship with them, making it a part of the learning process will increase the kids’ interest and engagement. Video materials, for example, can be a great aid when it comes to complex science lessons. Khan Academy, a leading educational platform has thousands of short video lessons available in major world languages. Even online games, which are considered to be one of the biggest foes of education, can be used to improve the learning processes. Several quiz applications such as Kahoot can help the teachers assess their students’ progress in a fun interactive way thanks to the gamification techniques used in the app.

Another crucial aspect of education that is influenced by technology is inclusivity. It gives students the means to accommodate the educational process to their personal learning style and speed. With digital learning platforms that let you skip the parts you already know or review the concepts you’re struggling with, no one will feel stuck or left behind. Duolingo is a great example of an app that lets you learn foreign languages at your own pace. An independent study of the City University of New York has proved that 34 hours of learning on Duolingo equals a whole semester of a university language course.

Students who aren’t interested in regular subjects can find a sense of belonging elsewhere—there are plenty of learning communities and online courses that can connect you with likeminded people from all over the world. Nowadays platforms such as Udemy or edX offer hundreds of academic and practical courses from renowned professionals that have only been available to a small number of people before.

Finally, technology has the ability to significantly improve the level of inclusion of mentally and physically disabled students. For some, they may create a way to participate in class more easily, while others will benefit from the complex distance learning methods. It wouldn’t come as a surprise that Google (News - Alert) was at the forefront of distance learning with Google Classroom that recreates all the educational processes with an online application suite.
