Business Spotlight: Krishen Iyer, MAIS Consulting Services



Krishen Iyer is an industry leader in insurance marketing and consulting. He grew up in California and graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration. He began his insurance career immediately after graduating from college. This work focused on distribution centers for insurance-related products, as well as insurance sales and services.



His early work on managing lead companies and creating traffic for affiliate insurance distribution centers built a foundation for Iyer's marketing and consulting career. Not only has Krishen owned, operated, and sold several companies, but his hands-on insurance experience demonstrates broad-based knowledge in marketing for the insurance lead vertical.  Iyer utilized this background to create Managed Benefits Services, which he sold after eighteen years. He is proud that the company is still alive and thriving and excited to see its continued prosperity under its new management.

1) Why did you start your business?

I sold my former company, Managed Benefits Services, early in 2020. Managed Benefits Services was a national leader in contracting and marketing. After this sale, I saw an opportunity to position similar organizations to achieve the same success Managed Benefits Services did. Today, MAIS Consulting Services advises clients, predominantly marketing and contracting organizations, to identify knowledge gaps and growth opportunities. We primarily focus on client relationships, business development, company policies, and strategic growth.

2) How do you set goals for your business?

A choosy mindset for client selection helps MAIS consulting establish upfront guidelines about the caliber of services a client should expect to receive. We are maintaining this transparency to position our firm and our clients to benefit mutually. In my opinion, business goals should prioritize quality over quantity. As a result, MAIS Consulting is incredibly detail-oriented in selecting our clients. We need to take on clients that we know can receive an adequate amount of time and guidance from our team, because that's what all businesses deserve. If we have concluded that we can help, we guarantee that your business will reap the award.

Whenever MAIS Consulting partners with a client, our ultimate goal is to support their growth, improve their margins, add consumers to their pipeline, and put them on a solid track to success and profit. Our experienced team helps build, rebrand, and sell companies. We plan on achieving these goals through forging strategic partnerships, drafting marketing agreements, and contracting. This game plan is crucial for our clients in setting unique goals that yield an excellent outcome.

3) What would you say is your "formula" for success?

Industry expertise drives our formula for success. Eighteen years ago, I founded Managed Benefits Services to offer support and marketing opportunities for insurance companies and agencies. After almost two decades of specializing in health insurance clients, I realized the potential to dig deeper into marketing, consulting, and contracting. Today, MAIS Consulting takes the same framework, strategies, and tactics to build and sell Managed Benefits Services, but extends those to helping all companies in the insurance distribution industry.

4) In your opinion, what are the qualities of a good leader?

A good leader needs to lead by example. Leading by example comes from experience. There is an expectation for a leader to execute confidence in their decision-making. Confidence comes from having sat in the room where executives made similar decisions to the ones you are about to make. Seeing how these decisions pan out helps a leader know that where they chose to direct their business and clients is the most effective option.

A good leader also inspires confidence. When beginning to work with a client, I first like to make sure that their team feels empowered. Team empowerment requires equipping the client with industry-specific tools that are tried-and-true drivers of success. A good leader also knows that a company is only as strong as its weakest links. You can expect us to encourage a client's executive leadership to dig from the bottom-up and assess strengths and weaknesses. A bottom-approach strategy gives our clients the information we need to determine what works best for them and what doesn't.

5) What does the future hold for your business?

Moving forward, MAIS will continue to demonstrate that our experience speaks for itself. Eighteen years in the business means that you will always count on our consulting strategies and tactics to get the job done. For example, every future client should expect to receive a comprehensive consultation. This consultation helps to identify gaps and opportunities. After our consultation, we will develop a comprehensive report and project plan. The project plan includes timelines, projected milestones, a cost analysis, and a schedule.

I am also excited to integrate innovative digital marketing tools into each of our client's business marketing strategies. Moving your business online can help save you money and stay on-trend during stay-at-home and quarantine orders. I am specifically interested in encouraging our clients to join a publisher network or Facebook (News - Alert) to gain traction. Online business marketing requires patience and maintenance, both of which are easier to develop when you have a mentor like MAIS Consulting in your corner.
