SOASTA Aces Cloud Testing, Has $30 Million More to Move Forward

By Doug Barney, TMCnet Editor at Large

The brilliance of an idea is often judged by the amount of money investors throw at it, and with that criteria, SOASTA (News - Alert) must be onto something in the mobile and Web apps performance testing market. The company recently stockpiled an extra $30 million in funding, bringing its investment total to $63 million.

Testing technologies are nothing new. After all, you can’t deploy an important chunk of software without giving it a decent run through. SOASTA really aims at the not-altogether-new mobile and Web apps markets, and allows testing to be done in the cloud. The advantage here is that, just like with Platform as a Service (PaaS), cloud testing means there is no infrastructure for developers to bother with.

SOASTA is hoping to pitch its cloud testing to MSPs through its PERFORM partner program, launched globally earlier this year.

The MSP pitch has two sides. On the tech side, SOASTA has three main test automation tools, CloudTest, which as you already guessed is for the cloud, TouchTest for the mobile market, and mPulse for application performance testing.

Last month SOASTA had more good news when Gartner (News - Alert) picked the company as a leader in its 2013 Magic Quadrant for Integrated Software Quality Suites. This is a market that is seeing particular growth in the mobile apps sector, Gartner believes.

“(SOASTA) has been expanding its presence globally and expanding its partnerships, and has continued to deliver innovation in a consistent fashion,” Gartner said. “The combination of SOASTA’s strong real-time analytics with a codeless automation environment and RUM solution provides a good foundation for driving improved test effectiveness.”

SOASTA believes it is on the right track with its testing. “Continuous innovation is driving IT today. SOASTA believes that automation and analytics are required to deliver quality user experiences in a mobile world,” said Tom Lounibos (News - Alert), SOASTA CEO.

IDC also likes what it sees in SOASTA. The research house looked at the  cloud automation testing market in its "IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Cloud Testing and ASQ SaaS (News - Alert)  2012-2013 Vendor Analysis - Enabling Business Agility and Quality in the Cloud" report.

IDC says SOASTA is a serious and solid player in this market, and found its technology could help shops as they migrate to the cloud.
