Yahoo! to Make Big Video Buy in Dailymotion?

By Nicole Spector, Contributing Writer

Yahoo! is making major moves in what could be interpreted as an effort to get itself back up and running after years of dull performance. Just this morning, the Internet corporation announced on its corporate blog that it acquired a social recommendation startup called Jybe, stating that the investment would “supercharge [Yahoo!'s (News - Alert)] efforts to build great products and experiences for the millions of people who come to Yahoo! every day.”

Yahoo! may be looking for more supercharging in the area of video. The company is reportedly considering investments in the online video sharing company, Dailymotion.

Yahoo! could buy up to 75 percent of the France-based website – which is the 12th largest video website in the world. France Telecom (News - Alert)-Orange acquired Dailymotion for $170 million through a two-phase deal that closed last January. Dailymotion is now worth about $300 million.

If the deal goes through, it would be Yahoo!'s biggest acquisition under chief Marisa Mayer, who took control of the company last year.

Mayer recently said at a conference in San Francisco that she was making a priority of markets outside the United States, which is where the company earns most of its revenue. It is speculated that the buy could help Yahoo get a strong hold in online video in parts of Europe and Asia.

The move would also be fitting for Dailymotion, which has said it is seeking a U.S. partner.

If the deal does go through, it will be interesting to see if and how Dailymotion will change. As of now, the site sports some pretty raunchy material, and is a known “Not Safe For Work” site. That just doesn't seem compatible with Yahoo!'s squeaky clean, professional image.
