Com Hem, TiVo Ready to Launch Hybrid IPTV for Swedish Households

By Tara Seals, TMCnet Contributor

Swedish telecom and pay-TV operator Com Hem is launching a multiscreen IPTV service using TiVo (News - Alert), scheduled to launch this spring with availability in 1.74 million connected households.

"We are excited to…deliver an advanced IPTV solution that allows non-set-top-box subscribers to enjoy TiVo, for the ultimate combination of traditional and next-generation television,” said Joshua Danovitz, vice president and general manager of international for TiVo.

The service will be a hybrid TV model, melding traditional television content, video on demand (VOD) libraries, over the top (OTT) content and applications. All content will be brought together through a fully integrated viewing experience via the TiVo interface for set-tops, tablets, smartphones and browser-based experiences.

"We reviewed a number of alternatives to find the best way to offer our customers the absolute best television experience by providing a full suite of linear television services, VOD, and broadband delivered content (including OTT/pay services) to every room and device in and out of our customers' home,” said Tomas Franzén, CEO of Com Hem (News - Alert). “TiVo will be a significant part of our future plans, which will redefine our subscriber proposition with features like TV Everywhere, remote recording, universal search, smart recommendations and access to a wide range of third-party interactive applications."

Com Hem has tapped content security specialist Verimatrix’ (News - Alert) Video Content Authority System (VCAS) as the security infrastructure for the service. Com Hem's broadcast and hybrid STBs will feature advanced cardless ViewRight clients that complement enhanced HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) ViewRight Web support for PC/Mac, tablet and mobile devices, visible from a single conditional access (CA (News - Alert)) platform.

"We recognize Verimatrix as to provide value in securing our new multi-network services” said Jens Persson, development manager of Com Hem. “A single source for rights management across linear and on-demand content offers our customers the absolute best television experience. Verimatrix has provided excellent support in the integration of VCAS with TiVo and we look forward to launching one of the world's most advanced TV services."

"We are delighted to be chosen by Com Hem for this leading-edge deployment that highlights the power of hybrid network architectures,” said Steve Oetegenn (News - Alert), chief sales and marketing officer at Verimatrix. “Providing an integrated experience across these touch points demands a sophisticated combination of user interface, metadata and security technologies. We feel that the partnership between TiVo and Verimatrix provides a compelling combination of strengths to Com Hem that optimize quality, functionality and the consumer experience."
