ViaWest Emphasizes Reliability, Strong Customer Service

By Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, TMC

ViaWest, which says it’s the nation’s largest privately held data center, prides itself on “first-class facilities with first-class customer services” and competitive partner programs.

That’s the word from Micah Berninghausen, ViaWest sales engineer, who met with TMCnet this week in Las Vegas.

The Denver-based company, which was founded in 1999, offers co-location, managed services and cloud offerings under one roof. About six months ago ,ViaWest launched a VMware-based open API cloud offering. ViaWest offers these services from its 22 data centers, which are located in the markets of Dallas; Denver; Las Vegas; Portland, OR.; and Salt Lake City.

A key differentiator for ViaWest is its reliability.

“We really focus on uptime” of the network, power and cooling, Berninghausen told TMCnet. In fact, the company has had 100 percent uptime on power and the network since it started business, he said. It’s this kind of attention to detail, he says, that allows ViaWest to deliver a very high level of customer service.

“We have customers we got in 1999 who are still with us,” he says.

To get customers off to a good start, ViaWest provides program management at no cost to help customers get up and running.

ViaWest has about 2,000 customers, and the average monthly customer spend is $5,000 to $20,000.

The company leverages the channel to help bring its offerings to market. ViaWest launched its channel program a year and a half ago. Its channel partners consist of systems integrators, VARs and other professional IT types; professional sales organizations/agents that have sold telecom services traditionally; and realtors.

TMCnet spoke with Berninghausen of ViaWest this week at the Channel Partners event, which is owned and operated by Virgo Publishing Inc., at the conference center in Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.
