VoIP Resellers Still Need to Consider Security Risks

By Juliana Kenny, TMCnet Web Editor

“Phreaking” is the new term for dial-through phone fraud, and such a practice can be extremely detrimental to a company’s call traffic. Panasonic (News - Alert) has realized the value of protecting its TDE and NCP voice switch platform, and has since installed Wick Hill’s (News - Alert) Control Phreak solution.

The solution stops illegal call traffic by working in the background. It allows for user regulation, it can block problem calls, as well as leave all the important and useful call traffic unaffected.

With a pricing structure that appeals to both enterprises and SME’s, the Control Phreak solution will prevent phone fraud in real time for Panasonic. Siobhan Gibbs, manager for VAD for Wick Hill stated, “Clients need to protect their VoIP activities every bit as much as they protect their data activities, if they’re to prevent toll fraud. If resellers are aware of the issues of toll fraud and don’t advise clients of the need for security, then when something goes wrong, guess who’ll get the blame?!”

Control Phreak is one of several services from Wick Hill that secure VoIP networks and data systems. Gibbs continued, “Resellers who educate themselves on security for converged solutions will be in a great position to act as trusted advisors and take advantage of the unstoppable growth of convergence.”

Gibbs went on to mention that about 90 percent of resellers still do not fully appreciate the security risks that go along with maintaining VoIP networks.
