As enterprises increasingly transition to VoIP-based networks, what happens in the network ultimately affects call quality. This was never really a problem back when end points were connected to TDM environments, but alas – times inevitably change. In light of this, a session was recently conducted by Director of Strategic Technology Advancement Amit Kapoor at the International Avaya (News - Alert) User Group conference, discussing monitoring and maintaining voice quality over a converged data network.
One thing Kapoor pointed out was that voice quality problems could have a bandwidth deficiency, which could cause competing video transmissions and/or network congestion. Additionally, he stressed that those responsible for voice quality need visibility into all aspects of the network and endpoints, that way the problem resolution can occur.
One of the most prevalent issues in VoIP environments today is dealing with poor call quality. 60 percent of VoIP quality problems, however, have nothing to do with the VoIP call server, and so voice support teams struggle to identify and address the actual quality problems that are pestering them.
