The Hidden Costs of Traditional Voice Plans

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

Even in a budget-minded economy, too many businesses are unaware of the hidden costs buried in the bills of their traditional communications monthly plans. What many fail to realize is that some providers are putting unnecessary features that are rarely used and are charged per item. This is where VoIP is not only beneficial for efficiency, but for cost as well.

Traditional services tend to charge for every feature, regardless of whether they are used or not. What’s more, phone providers can lock you into a phone contract, making any tiny adjustment impossible while money goes out the window.

VoIP makes it easier for companies to employ more features in their phone systems without incurring extra hidden costs. With VoIP, new applications are being developed all the time. Web-enabled call centers, remote telecommuting, collaborative white boarding and even applications for personal productivity, such as unified messaging and “follow me” services, make VoIP a multifaceted solution without the line-by-line pennies adding up. VoIP service providers tend to offer these in a flat-rate bill.

VoIP technology treats services on the phone like any other kind of data, enabling the users to attach documents to voice messages, or participate in virtual meetings with the help of shared data and video conferencing.

There are many other ways that VoIP can help small businesses. When it comes to cost, VoIP requires little investment, its operating costs are 20 to 80 percent lower than traditional telephone costs and those costs are often predicable.

VoIP can make a small business look like a large business because of its efficiency. Many associate a PBX (News - Alert) system with “sophisticated” companies, and when a call reaches the right person in the right department straight away, it contributes to a positive image for the person dialing in.

VoIP services are changing how businesses communicate. With its low costs, convenience and portability, and advanced communication features, traditional phone systems are quickly becoming a thing of the past.
