Virtual Receptionist a Lot Cheaper Than the Real Thing

It’s a pretty well-established fact that one of the fastest ways to make your small business look small is to answer the phones yourself when you’re in, and let an answering machine do it when you’re not. To overcome this, one of the first moves many entrepreneurs make is to hire a receptionist as soon as they feel they can afford it.

But does it really make sense? Not necessarily from a financial standpoint. Say you hire a person to answer the phones and agree to pay him/her a salary that’s equal to what the U.S. Health and Human Services Department considers the bare minimum threshold for the poverty level -- $10,830 per year. That translates to $902.50 per month, straight out of your pocket. Now compare that cost to the 2,000-minute package on my1voice.

For $50 per month you get a toll-free number with around-the-clock virtual receptionist that never takes coffee breaks, bathroom breaks, sick leave, or vacations. Your virtual receptionist is always there to help customers and business partners find and speak to the right person. It allows you to create as many extensions as you need for everyone on your team, even if they don’t work out of the same office, and provides a dial-by-name directory in case callers need a little extra help.

In other words, you get a phone system that’s more available and offers more capabilities than any single person possibly can. And you have $852.50 left that you can apply to other aspects of your business. For example, an assistant wouldn’t be required to sit next to the phone 8 hours a day. Instead, this person could be filing, working on proposals and moving other important business needs forward while you’re communicating with your new and existing clients.

Which begs the question: If you came into an extra $852.50 per month, what would you spend it on?
