More than 18 Million U.K. Addresses Now Have a Telephone Preference Service Registration

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

Selectabase, a provider of TPS check website and free list cleaning software, has released the new numbers for Telephone Preference Service registrations. More than 18 million U.K. addresses now have a telephone number registered with the TPS and 2 million businesses are registered with CTPS – TPS’ business version.

According to an official release, Telephone Preference Service is a U.K. opt-out telephone list that is intended to prevent telemarketing calls to those who do not wish to receive them. The list is administered on behalf of Ofcom by the British direct marketing industry. Consumers or businesses can register with the TPS or CTPS free of charge.

For advertising and marketing purposes, companies send out marketing calls to users. The figures released by Selectabase indicates that there is going to be more pressure on organizations who send out marketing calls to ensure that numbers are checked against the relevant preference service before being called.

If a business makes an unsolicited phone call then it is breach of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 and if the breach is upheld, a fine up to £5000 can be imposed.

The growing popularity of the TPS among users does not mean that it will hinder direct marketing but it will only help businesses evolve into a more sophisticated unit and better organized in their activities to ensure they respect the preferences of the people they call.

In order to help businesses avoid unsolicited calls, a lot of providers are helping callers check the phone numbers in their database against the latest versions of the Telephone Preference Service suppression file, which is updated monthly.

One such provider Selectabase has claimed that they provide a range of highly targeted and proven direct marketing lists to help businesses to reach and convert new prospects. Companies can tune their campaign to reach either business or consumer prospects with affordable data that is accurate and responsive.

Steve Sellwood of Selectabase has commented that it’s probably fair to say that a few years ago there was far less awareness of the TPS amongst businesses using the phone and possibly even a degree of complacency, but they’ve seen such growth in uptake of their main services, 1check and Easycheck, that they feel businesses are now far more aware of their legal and ethical obligations.
