Nuance and Gracenote Combine Speech and Mobile Music

By Stefania Viscusi, TMCnet Assistant Editor

Nuance Communications, provider of speech applications and solutions and digital entertainment technology provider Gracenote, announced today an expansion of their partnership to jointly develop and market speech-enabled solutions for digital music collections on mobile devices.

Prior to today's announcement, Gracenote and Nuance (News - Alert) entered a joint development effort for speech-enabled automobile entertainment solutions.

Their latest partnership comes just as easier access and navigation of music on mobile devices may become desirable.

"As handset manufacturer's offer enhanced memory on mobile devices -- with expected capacity for thousands of songs within the next year - it is becoming increasingly difficult for consumers to navigate the large music collections stored on their mobile devices," said Marc Theeuwes, director, mobile products, Gracenote in a statement to the press.

"By working together, Gracenote and Nuance are making it easy for music lovers to access their favorite songs on mobile devices through speech," he added.

Utilizing the speech capabilities in Nuance and Gracenote's MediaVOCs phonetic database and play list navigation, this new solution, when incorporated in MP3-enabled mobile devices, will provide full voice control of music collections.

The new system uses speech without the need for specialized commands. For example, users can say the name of any song, artist or play list, select a specific mix of music by saying the name of a genre, describe a desired music style or ask "what is this" to find out more details about a song. The new solution also recognizes singers by their nicknames.

After simply speaking their requests, Nuance's text-to-speech engine for the mobile environment verifies a user's selection by repeating their choice-- for completely eyes-free, hands-free convenience, safety and ease of access of a user's music play list.

Both Nuance and Gracenote are demonstrating the new feature the week at CTIA Wireless (News - Alert) 2006.
