Going Green With BlueNote

By Rich Tehrani, President and Editor-in-Chief

(The following is taken from TMCnet’s Green Blog)

BlueNote Networks was founded in 2005 with a simple mission. The company wanted to provide “a cost-efficient implementation supporting global reach of voice services to remote users, and the ability to support quick and easy integration of these services into an existing applications environment.”

BlueNote’s Director of Market Development, Greg Pisano (News - Alert) took the time to answer several questions I had about the company, what they think about the “greening of technology” and what they will be speaking about in their presentation at Green Technology World next month.

RT: How is the green movement changing the way your company operates?
GP: At BlueNote Networks (News - Alert), we view teleworking as a strategic initiative to help reduce the volume of commuter traffic, pollution, and energy consumption. Teleworking can also help maintain the continuity of business operations, since situations such as adverse weather conditions and other natural or manmade disruptions need not significantly impact the organization’s ability to operate. And, we are delivering enterprise solutions to our customers that enable secure teleworking. We also practice what we preach and are using these solutions in our own day to day operations.

RT: Have customers been pushing your organization to produce more green products and services?
GP: We listen very closely to our customers and we’re seeing increased customer interest in teleworking across many market sectors both public and private for the reasons mentioned in the previous response. They are embracing our teleworking solutions that combine software-based IP telephony and business applications through Web services, so that customers can gain access to voice-enabled business applications from any location they have access to the Internet. Our products run on industry standard server platforms so customers have a choice and the flexibility to use (or reuse) existing hardware platforms.

RT: How long has your company been focusing on providing green technologies?
GP: Actually, we’ve been focused on combing SIP-based IP telephony and business applications through Web services technologies since our inception in January 2005. SIP forms the foundation for unified communications while Web services provide the ability to integrate voice into business applications enabling communications-enabled business processes. The benefit from a green perspective is realized by leveraging both of these to facilitate programs like teleworking that allows people to be just as effective and productive as being in the office. Another benefit is through asset reuse and resource sharing – the ability to treat voice as a Web service that can be shared and reused across multiple applications leveraging a platform-independent model. This allows new applications to be deployed on one or many existing computing platforms that can extend the life of installed computing technology. Also our SessionSuite WebCaller browser-based thin client allows users to access applications wherever they have an Internet connection.

RT: What customer pain does your company take away for customers?
GP: We address key issues on a number of fronts. For instance, we can interwork with and extend the capabilities of existing PBX (News - Alert) systems, while also leveraging existing corporate resources such as PSTN facilities and the IT applications infrastructure that can reduce corporate expenses. Our product works with a variety of phone devices including SIP hard/soft phones, analog phones, and mobile phones. We provide secure communications for each call with integral media and signaling encryption that eliminates the need for costly VPNs that can also impact performance and call quality.

Our solution makes employees easier to reach and they can conduct business regardless of their location, access device, or network to optimize productivity. Teleworking reduces absenteeism and lost work due to weather, traffic problems, stay-at-home injuries, or other personal causes, which is a big benefit to any business.

RT: What is the most effective green technology in your opinion?
GP: IP technology has paved the way to ubiquitous communications. IP provides the foundation for enabling strategic initiatives such as teleworking along with building blocks for enhanced application services accessible from anywhere, which should have a positive environmental impact and help create a greener world over time.

RT: Did you get a chance to see/hear the Live Earth (News - Alert) concert?
GP: I got to see some of the performances via the Internet and I applaud all the performers that participated. This is also a good example of how technology can be used to reach millions of people on a worldwide basis simultaneously over different mediums – TV, radio, Internet, and wireless channels.

RT: Can you make one prediction about the green movement in five years?
GP: I think that it’s fair to say that both the public sector and the private sector across a number of verticals will continue to embrace green initiatives such as teleworking to help the environment by reducing the number of cars on the road which should help in lowering air pollution levels and decrease fuel consumption.

RT: What will you be covering in your presentation at the Green Technology World Conference this September in Los Angeles?
GP: My presentation will examine the drivers, challenges and benefits associated with leveraging IP Telephony and Web services technology to help make a greener world.

IP Telephony is playing a key role by providing a practical approach to enhancing real-time communications, by integrating with business applications, and economically extending connectivity via the Internet. I also will discuss how combining IP Telephony with business applications through Web services can significantly increase user productivity and collaboration regardless of where users are located. And, how it can lower operational costs, enable greater business agility, and provide business continuity.

RT: What do you want the industry to know about your company?
GP: BlueNote Networks delivers SIP-based telephony and other interactive communication solutions as an integral part of an enterprise IT applications infrastructure. With our award-winning SessionSuite software, organizations can cost-effectively integrate IP Telephony with business applications through Web services and also voice-enable Web sites and portals to improve collaboration, efficiency, and productivity. And, we are doing our part by providing teleworking solutions that will ultimately help our environment.

RT: Where will your organization be over the next 3–5 years?
GP: Although it’s always difficult to predict the future, BlueNote Networks’ SessionSuite products are recognized as innovative solutions; they are field-proven and continue to gain market traction every day, so I’d say the future looks very bright. We believe the industry will view BlueNote as a significant player focused on changing the way companies communicate and collaborate.
