CompUSA Retails 8x8 Business VoIP Offering

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

VoIP and video service provider 8x8 announced that CompUSA will now sell Packet8 Virtual Office in each of its 226 retail outlets nationwide.

Packet8 Virtual Office is a VoIP-hosted PBX phone service that allows small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) to implement a business-class phone system with unlimited local and long distance calling in the U.S. and Canada for a flat-rate of $39.99 a month, as well as lower-priced metered plans and international calling.

The new agreement calls for CompUSA to offer a Packet8 Virtual Office starter kit comprised of three business-class telephones and terminal adapters, priced at $239.97 (after a $150 mail-in rebate). A single unit offering for expansion beyond the three-phone minimum is also available for $79.99 (after a $50 mail-in rebate). Virtual Office includes auto attendants, conference bridges, extension-to-extension dialing, business class voicemail and ring groups.

"We are pleased to augment our presence in CompUSA with our award-winning VoIP-hosted small business phone system," said Huw Rees, vice president of marketing and sales at 8x8 in a statement. "Now SMBs in more than 90 major metropolitan markets will be able to visit their local CompUSA store and purchase Packet8 Virtual Office, a solution that will dramatically cut their telecommunications cost and, at the same time, make them more efficient and competitive."

8x8 made news last month when it announced that it teamed with Uniden to introduce the UIP160P co-branded Packet8/Uniden cordless VoIP phone now available at The Home Depot.

The 5.8GHz digital cordless UIP160P is equipped with 8x8's VoIP technology as well as full router functionality, giving consumers access to Packet8 Internet calling plans. The UIP160P carries a suggested retail price of $99 and offers a mail-in rebate of $100 upon activation of a Packet8 service plan making the device free to Home Depot shoppers.

Expandable to up to 10 handsets, the Uniden UIP60P system is capable of deploying VoIP telephony throughout the home. The phone system includes a base station and caller ID handset with speakerphone and features such as 20 distinctive ringer options, caller ID, call waiting, handset paging and a new message waiting indicator with an alert tone option.
