Sagem-Interstar Demos Newly-Certified IP Fax Solutions in the Cisco Partner Pavilion during Interop Spring

By Patrick Barnard, Group Managing Editor, TMCnet

IP fax solutions provider Sagem-Interstar successfully demonstrated its Cisco AXP XMediusFAX T.38 Fax over IP (FoIP) fax server solutions for VoIP networks this past week during Interop Spring Las Vegas 2009.

Specifically, the company demonstrated its newly certified Cisco (News - Alert) Application Extension (AXP) 1.1.1 and Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) 7.0 FoIP server solutions in the Cisco Partner Pavilion, a turnkey exhibit package which includes kiosk, signage, speaking opportunity, cross-promotion and advertising exclusively for Cisco Powered Partner members. The goal of this special exhibit is to help Cisco and its key partners “ignite innovation.”

The Cisco Application Extension Platform (AXP) enhances the capabilities of the Cisco ISR, and is what enables Sagem’s (News - Alert) XMediusFAX software to run natively in the Cisco environment. In this regard the solution helps business customers get greater value out of their Cisco networks -- plus it fits in nicely with organizations’ unified communications and virtualization strategies.

The “boardless” IP fax solution means companies don’t have to make a huge upfront investment in new hardware – and because there is less equipment to install, monitor and maintain, they can lower their ongoing costs as well. What’s more the system enables companies to reduce their equipment footprint and use less energy to drive their fax systems.

In a video interview with Cisco Marketing Communications Manager Tugba Goksel -- posted on YouTube as well as Sagem-Interstar’s IP fax channel on TMCnet -- Christian Larocque, VP of Business Development at Sagem Interstar (News - Alert), said the company’s booth in the Partner Pavilion was “getting lots of traffic,” which he attributed to the presence of other major Cisco partners in the Pavilion. One of the advantages for Sagem-Interstar (News - Alert) in participating is that practically everyone visiting its booth is already using a Cisco powered network.

When asked what visitors to the booth could learn, Larocque said they could discover how to get greater value out of their Cisco networks using AXP to “truly leverage the power of the network.” He talked about how Sagem-Interstar’s IP fax solutions reduce hardware/equipment costs as well as how they provide “fax survivability” – a topic which relates to compliance and the automatic failover routing of critical fax communications in the event of a network failure or other disruption.

“From our standpoint, it’s a great opportunity for customers to reduce operating expenses and become more ‘green,’” Larocque said during the interview.

Green” indeed: Not only do Sagem-Interstar’s IP fax solutions help companies reduce energy consumption, they also help significantly reduce the amount of paper they use. Unlike traditional fax, IP faxes arrive in the recipient’s email inbox as PDF or TIFF attachments. That means users no longer have to get up and down from their desks to retrieve faxes after they are printed at the fax machine. At the same time, these email faxes are completely secure and verifiable, thus they help organizations meet increasingly prevalent compliance regulations. One simple fact that makes IP faxes more secure: They don’t sit at the fax machine for hours or days, for all eyes to see, while they are waiting to be retrieved.
