While it may seem like power goes out just when you need it the most, in today’s ever-connected society we’d all prefer to have power 24/7. Yet given the vagaries of weather, technology and accidents, it’s also true that we can lose power just about any time.

That’s the reason there’s a need for companies like Minuteman Power Technologies (News - Alert), which supplies uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) to companies everywhere.

Bill Allen, Director of Marketing at Minuteman, recently stopped by Dallas for a TMC (News - Alert) Editor’s Day event, and spoke with TMC CEO Rich Tehrani about the industry in general and what Minuteman is doing in particular. Allen was asked what sort of trends he’s been seeing in the market.

“We’re seeing that managers want manageability over what’s going on in terms of power on their network,” he said. “We’re also seeing a lot of remote power management technologies come into play.”

Tehrani then asked about the life-cycle of UPSs, and wondered if there was an opportunity to incorporate the Internet of Things into Minuteman’s product line to assure that power was always ready when needed. But Allen said his company was already out ahead of that.

“We have a date-code built in to notify you when it’s time to replace the batteries in your UPS,” he said. “Whatever date you put in, you can be automatically emailed or texted with a notification, ‘It’s time to change the batteries.’”

Allen was also asked how his company differentiates itself from competitors.

“We provide the longest warranty, best customer service, and the best on time delivery we can,” he noted “Along with a very competitive product.”

The question of the cloud’s impact was raised but again, Bill Allen (News - Alert) sees this as an opportunity, noting that as large data centers are being built, they’re going to need back-up power constantly.
