China BAK Battery, a manufacturer of lithium-based battery cells for power protection solutions, announced a new contract with Chery Automobile to supply 1000 high-power lithium-ion batteries to power Chery’s Ruilin M1 electric cars in 2012.

This contract is in addition to the agreement already signed by the companies earlier this year. In February both companies entered into a similar contract to supply 100 high-power battery units to Chery Automobile.

China BAK Battery’s rechargeable batteries find application in cellular phones, smartphones, notebook computers, e-bikes, electric vehicles, power tools, uninterruptible power supplies, and portable consumer electronics such as portable media players, portable gaming devices, personal digital assistants, or PDAs, camcorders, digital cameras, and Bluetooth headsets.

Ruilin M1 is one of the five electric vehicle models that have been approved for government use since early this year. The car is scheduled to be out in June 2012.

"We believe that this additional order from Chery, and their anticipated further orders and cooperation, further underline our ability to deliver high-quality battery products and lead the development of China's emerging electric vehicle battery market,” said Xiangqian Li, CEO of China BAK, in a statement.

“Likewise, we continue to expect additional orders from other domestic customers for our lithium-ion high-power batteries to power electric vehicles in China in 2012," commented Mr. Xiangqian Li, CEO of China BAK,” Li added.

Both companies have agreed to a long-term cooperation in electric vehicles industry.

In a related announcement, VYCON, which designs and manufactures advanced flywheel energy storage systems, has been selected by Austin Energy (News - Alert), a leading community-owned electric utility in the nation, to offer power backup solutions.

The clean power backup solutions from VYCON will help the electric utility protect the new Control Center of VYCON, which operates the utility’s data center and its grid including the switching of utility grid quadrants.
