Mobile VoIP Quietly at the Heart of the Mobility Revolution

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Contributor

Today, the mobile and Bring-your-own-device (BYOD) revolutions are grabbing all the headlines, but part of the foundation that makes it possible is mobile VoIP.

That’s because mobile VoIP is a key technology in allowing workers to take the office with them no matter where they go. Smartphones enable employees to leave the office, but this only works if the office can come with them. This means key databases need to be in the cloud instead of only accessible at the office, this means a digital workflow instead of a paper-based system—and it means business phones that travel with employees. Which is where mobile VoIP comes in.

For some businesses, cell phones have become business phones. These businesses are not fully leveraging the advantages of their in-house databases, however.

“Many businesses are switching to cloud-based CRM (Customer Relationship Management) or ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) application solutions for managing customer and organization metrics,” noted a recent CloudTweaks article. “Well, having a cloud-based business phone system that integrates CRM or ERP creates a unified system that increases productivity and revenue all through the power of the cloud.”

The advantage of mobile VoIP combined with CRM or ERP can be subtle but dramatic. For instance, a business that uses mobile VoIP with its CRM offering can pulling data from the application so that an employee can see who is calling, what product or service he or she is currently using, and any issues that are still on the table or have been resolved.

“And that is what they call a productivity multiplier,” added the CloudTweaks article.

Further, there’s the issue of BYOD. Moving business to an employee’s personal line is both bad for the company and bad for the business in that it shifts customers away from the business and also breaks down the wall for an employee between home and work life. But with mobile VoIP, an employee can use his home phone with his business number, avoiding both issues.

One service that is particularly well-suited for mobile VoIP is REVE Systems’ iTel Mobile Dialer Express. It lets workers make VoIP calls from any mobile phone, not just iPhones and those that run Android (News - Alert). The dialer works on Windows Mobile, Blackberry and even Symbian phones in addition to iOS and Android, making it a particularly adaptable mobile VoIP solution.

Further adding to the adaptability of iTel Mobile Dialer Express is its ability to run behind a NAT or private IP, and to pass through any firewall or blocked network when used in conjunction with REVE’s iTel Byte Saver solution.

BYOD and mobility are not going away. Behind the scenes, though, mobile VoIP is at the heart of both revolutions. At least for smart companies.
