Four Reasons Why Low-Cost VoIP Is Going To Rock Your World

By Miguel Leiva-Gomez, TMCnet Contributor

Internet connections have been getting cheaper. Some have felt it, while others are still paying $30 a month or more for 6 Mbits per second. The move towards a more affordable Web is a slow change, but it's inevitable. Today, in many countries of the world, people are paying close to $20 a month for 100 Mbit connections. As a cheaper Internet connection starts to become the norm, we'll see voice over IP (VoIP) as a more viable solution than the plain old telephone system (POTS). In fact, this is already starting to become reality in many cases.

TheDigest.Com has outlined four reasons why this is going to be a trend, and why VoIP is quite the phone service for customers around the world.

1: VoIP is cost-effective.

VoIP services are competing for lower prices. They also have free reign over their operations since they're using the Internet. This is in contrast to hard-line telephone services that are expensive to maintain and highly regulated; it's a boon to those who currently have Internet connections but are not able to afford high-quality landline telephone services.

Picture this: A very poor rural village decides to pitch in some money, buy a router and Internet service, and establish a sort of mini-ISP where everyone pays a fraction of the price. People who have never had the luxury of a phone can finally call out to their friends, families, and services.

2: International calling through VoIP is cheaper than conventional lines.

People who travel overseas could greatly benefit from VoIP because it is much cheaper to call back home than it would through regular terrestrial cell lines. VoIP customers get to pick from a list that contains numbers from around the world. Also, if you want to call out overseas from your home or place of business, you also benefit from significant cost reductions.

3: VoIP offers unlimited calling.

While most US telecom subscribers are used to getting unlimited minutes in their calling plans, much of the world still has limited minutes even on their landlines. VoIP offers an unlimited alternative to these people, and sometimes even throws in unlimited international calling to several countries.

4: VoIP is everywhere.

Your smartphone, your tablet, your laptop, your ultrabook, and your desktop can all run VoIP services. This means that you can bring your primary source of communication with you everywhere you go, whether you’re at the mall, on a train, in Bangladesh, or having pizza with your kids.

With these reasons, what’s not to love about VoIP?
