Dialogic Unveils VideoVision, Emphasizing Its Focus on Mobile and Video

By Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, TMC

Forget what you know about Dialogic (News - Alert).

The company, which made its name as a pioneer in the VoIP/CTI board space, has been through a lot of changes over the years. Today Dialogic is heavily focused on providing turnkey solutions that address mobile and video requirements for service providers, particularly service providers in places like Africa and Russia.

“Our sweet spot in our product set is people moving into 3G,” says Jim Machi, SVP of marketing for Dialogic.

Just before Mobile World Congress (News - Alert), Dialogic unveiled a video quality of experience measurement tool. The company has been demonstrating that solution, called VideoVision, this week in Barcelona.

VideoVision measures the perceptual quality of video, which is to say the quality of video from the standpoint of the end consumer. That’s important because a lot can go wrong between the video server and the video endpoint, given all the transcoding and adaptations that happen in between.

Brightcove and Mobi TV are among the users of VideoVision.

Components of the VideoVision solution include a video quality analyzer, which measures quality on streaming video, and a quality control server, which checks that video quality is acceptable on content that already has been transcoded but is awaiting use in on-demand environments, Dialogic CTO Jeffrey Bloom tells TMCnet.

In addition to VideoVision, Dialogic sells turnkey softswitches, gateways, and bandwidth optimization solutions to carriers. It also is seeing growth in the software-based solutions (an evolution of its traditional board business) it now offers as platforms on which customers can build such services as mobile videoconferencing.

Machi of Dialogic says a key differentiator for the company is its long history in and knowledge about communications. And while the company got its start in the voice space, it’s no easy task to deliver high-quality voice, he adds. As with voice, customers have high expectations when it comes to quality relating to video.
