Media Phone Market's Growth Means New Revenue Streams for Operators and Communications Software Providers

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

Tech companies in the mobile unified communications space have reason to cheer this week, as new research indicates IP media phones could generate a market value worth $5 billion or more by 2014.

ABI Research’s (News - Alert) latest study, “Connected Home Devices (Fourth Screen),” reveals that the growth of media phones, digital photo frames and Internet appliances could mean new revenue streams for mobile operators.

“While the first media phone models only appeared late last year in the US (earlier in Asia), more than 30 million units will be shipped in 2014,” said ABI Research industry analyst Michael Inouye. “These devices, which feature video playback, Internet connectivity and some form of voice functionality, will be among the strongest performers among Fourth Screen products.”

ABI’s report is good news for mobile IP communications software providers like D2 Technologies (News - Alert).

The company recently announced it now supports a line of energy efficient processors from Cavium Networks, a provider of semiconductor products that allow processing for networking, communications, wireless, video and security applications.

Additionally, D2’s vPort platform was recently ported to the Kirkwood family of 88F6xxx Sheeva core system-on-chips, SoCs, from the Marvell Technology Group.

Officials at D2 said optimizing the vPort for the Kirkwood processors offers OEMs and ODMs a versatile and economical platform for addressing a host of next generation residential, SOHO and SMB networking products including VoIP-enabled gateways, routers and IADs.

“When paired with the Kirkwood family of processors, our VoIP technology enables OEMs and ODMs to more easily roll out industry leading connected home devices with varying voice/data integration needs,” said Doug Makishima (News - Alert), chief operating officer at D2 Technologies.
