'Mobile VPN and BYOD Don't Mix' Webinar from MobileIron

By Ashley Caputo, TMCnet Web Editor

Virtual phone systems are changing the business world as it allows a user to create an office out of his or her mobile phone. With BYOD and mobility usage increasing dramatically, it is now more than ever combining work data with personal data that may already exist on a user’s device, which has caused the issue of security to reach headlines. For businesses, the separation of personal and work data on a mobile device is essential for the security of data-at-rest and for the security of data-in-motion.

The virtual private network (VPN) allows businesses to create an integrated platform of connection with user’s business computer or mobile networks from remote locations. But, this also puts company’s information at risk if users are downloading applications that could cause a breach in privacy. In order for a company to monitor the devices that are being used on their VPN, it is important that they are utilizing security solutions like MobileIron’s Mobile App Security and Access Control, which allow administrators to set which applications are required, allowed or banned.

MobileIron also has an Application Distribution feature that delivers a centralized location for business applications that allows IT administrators to directly publish private apps to their end-users without putting them in a commercial store front like the App store. It also recommends which applications are allowed to be downloaded and are supported by the IT.

To further expand on the topic tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. PDT San Francisco /11:00 a.m. EDT New York, MobileIron will be hosting a webinar, “Mobile VPN and BYOD Don’t Mix,” which will address the issue of traditional mobile VPN implementations creating privacy, cost and user experience issues that damage the adoption of BYOD programs. This session will discuss the limitations of traditional mobile VPNs and how to implement app-specific secure tunneling to overcome these limitations.
