By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Mobile device management (MDM) is crucial for enterprises embracing the bring your own device (BYOD) trend. MDM’s main objective is to provide a high level of security on a mobile communications network, while supporting multiple devices and continuing to reduce cost and downtime.

MDM solutions from leading mobile device management providers like MobileIron and Vodafone (News - Alert) are securing enterprise networks by providing an effective device monitoring and security. The growing complexity of enterprise networks is making mobile device management more challenging than ever. As mobile networks expand to accommodate growing voice and data traffic from different types of mobile devices and burgeoning applications, management of mobile devices continues to evolve.

According to Vodafone, the new generation of mobility revolves around improving user experience. With the increase of mobile apps and BYOD in the workplace, robust application management is critical to successful secure device management. Businesses need to ensure that personal data in mobile devices are separated, but at the same they must reassure that by doing so they are not compromising the security of business data.

As part of its commitment to deliver improved mobility experience to users, Vodafone recently announced that Vodafone Device Manager now features a robust application management system that retains user experience whilst protecting secure business data.

The Vodafone Device Manager features a connected container architecture that provides fine-grained security that protects app data for Mobile IT but is invisible to the user, making it user friendly. It features two components AppConnect, and AppTunnel. AppConnect containerizes apps to protect data-at-rest without touching personal data while AppTunnel provides secure tunnelling and access control to protect app data-in-motion.

The company also announced that Vodafone Mobile Threat Manager can be deployed in conjunction with Vodafone Device Manager or added at a later date. The combined mobile device management solution offers a fully managed, cloud-based security solution for mobile devices, protecting business users’ personal data and their Web data against sophisticated cyber threats.
