TransNexus Unveils NexOSS 5.0 with VoIP Fraud Detection Technology

By Tammy Wolf, TMCnet Web Editor

Behind all the local and international calls being placed by people across the globe, the ongoing issue of fraudulent call termination continues to plague the telecommunications and VoIP industry.

This multifaceted phone con, in which calls are swindled in such a manner that telcos don’t collect a termination fee, is especially cropping up overseas. In fact, on average, U.K. telcos are losing up to an astounding $150 million annually from international call deceit alone.

As the telecommunications landscape evolves, and the issue of call fraud comes to the forefront in 2012, there’s one company in particular that is quietly, but successfully, making noteworthy progress in how outbound communications traffic should be properly routed.

TransNexus (News - Alert), a company specializing in least cost routing products and services, announced today its new solution for tackling the growing problem of traffic pumping fraud in the VoIP industry. NexOSS 5.0 is a VoIP-based least cost routing software that packages a fraud detection module. It works in conjunction with TransNexus’ OSPrey routing server in order to deliver to VoIP carriers least cost routing, number portability, quality of service controls, traffic analysis and billing reports.

According to TransNexus officials, the inclusion of these fraud detection features guarantees an additional layer of protection and analysis within the solution.

“Fraud has been an issue for traditional telephone companies for years,” said Jim Dalton (News - Alert), president of TransNexus, in a press release. “But it was never a factor for VoIP services until recently. More and more, we hear about SIP phones and SIP PBXs that have been hacked and utilized to make unauthorized calls costing thousands of dollars.”

Also included in the all-new NexOSS 5.0 solution are smart metering features that can pinpoint a suspicious spike in call traffic to a specific destination. When this occurs, the NexOSS system is designed to automatically put a temporary hold on the route and transmit SNMP and e-mail alarms. This will minimize fraud losses, while simultaneously protecting legitimate calls.

In addition, the NexOSS 5.0 release comes with quality of service (QoS) alarms so it can monitor 24 different call quality statistics – such as packet jitter, packet loss and packet latency – and identify and isolate call fidelity QoS problems, whether it’s in the source network, destination network, or based on end-to-end packet flow received by the calling or called party. Having the QoS alarms in place can then help detect any QoS issues and possibly suspend that provider from the routing table.

“This release of NexOSS addresses the major issues reported by our customers,” said Dalton. “With the addition of the fraud detection and QoS monitoring features, NexOSS 5.0 is leading the way in next generation least cost routing and VoIP network management.”

Those attending ITEXPO (News - Alert) East 2012 this week will have the opportunity to get a first look at NexOSS 5.0, which TransNexus will be showcasing at its booth, No. 311, during the communications conference, being held Jan. 31 to Feb. 3.

Leading up to the show, Dalton told TMCnet that its NexOSS product align’s with the company’s goal of spreading the message that fraud is “very real” in the VoIP industry.

“This release of NexOSS addresses the major issues reported by our customers,” Dalton told TMCnet. “With the addition of the fraud detection and QoS monitoring features, NexOSS 5.0 is leading the way in next generation least cost routing and VoIP network management.”

So, what does TransNexus hope to take home from ITEXPO East, an event hailed as the world’s largest communications conference?

“ITEXPO is a great opportunity for us to introduce new products and get a real understanding of the current market trends. We’ve never missed a show,” said Dalton.
