IP telephony solutions company Mitel (News - Alert) next week at VoiceCon Spring 2007 will be unveiling latest enhancements to its unified communications platforms, applications and devices. The company’s portfolio now features what it calls “presence everywhere” capabilities.

Just what are “presence everywhere” features, and how do they enhance IP telephony? Mitel said in a news release that the new capabilities “allow employees to be more effective in the way they communicate through their PCs, phones and mobile devices with colleagues in their organization, or as part of a federated group of external partners like suppliers or customers.”

More specifically, the company is taking IP telephony-based presence features beyond the walls of the office, letting knowledge workers do their jobs while on-the-go. Mitel’s stance is that the productivity, customer loyalty and revenue benefits of presence features need not be stuck in one place, but should be tools available to every employee regardless of his or her location.

“Our presence-everywhere capabilities dramatically enhance the value of IP communications,” said Doug Michaelides, vice president of global marketing at Mitel, in a statement. “Mitel is helping customers achieve the promise of Unified Communications with our ‘presence-enabled’ applications and a desktop portfolio that allows organizations to seamlessly unify their communications thereby improving their ROI on existing IT infrastructure.”

Mitel’s approach to IP telephony is very focused on the increasing ubiquity of the mobile worker in a global market. In adapting its solutions as described here, the company looked at ways to give employees access to unified communications tools in the office, or when working from home or on the road. An extensive range of APIs, designed to facilitate the integration of voice and presence features with other business applications, makes this possible.

Enhancements to Mitel’s portfolio include upgrades for the products summarized below.

  • Live Business Gateway (News - Alert) – now includes support for centralized and distributed deployments
  • Mitel 5330 and 5340 IP Phones – now can display both corporate and personal directories in addition to presence status
  • Mitel 5550 IP Console – now includes presence display, IM, and improved call handling
  • Mitel 5560 IP Phone – now offers unique multitasking tools for heavy call volume environments
  • Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platform – Release 8 will soon be out, with a range of operating models designed to deliver enhanced scalability and performance
Other enhancements to Mitel’s IP telephony portfolio will be announced during the coming months. The company actively is seeking to simplify the adoption of unified communications in multiple environments. The focus on business feature integration for leveraging unified communications tools in IP telephony environments will continue to play a role in the realization of that goal.
