VoIP Services Becoming Increasingly Popular for Enterprise Communications

By Nick Ruble, TMCnet Contributing Writer

According to recent surveys conducted by Infonetics (News - Alert) Research, voice over IP (VoIP) services have been gaining a lot of popularity due to the demand for a simpler, more flexible management solution.

Two reports were published, the first being SIP Trunking and Enterprise SBC Strategies, and the second VoIP and UC Services and Subscribers Market Share and Forecast. Findings show that while residential and SOHO VoIP services are getting a great deal of recognition, business-based services are growing nearly twice as fast.

“Adoption of VoIP services across both the residential and business segments continues to grow, and we expect strong global growth in VoIP service revenue over at least the next five years,” said directing analyst for VoIP and IMS at Infonetics, Diane Myers.

All the facts point towards VoIP solutions dominating in the communications marketplace. Within the next four years, the availability of VoIP and unified communications services is projected to increase by more than twice as much. With the recent demand for cloud-based services, PBX (News - Alert) and UC revenue is up over 30 percent, and even basic residential VoIP services earned $58 billion – 16 percent ahead of 2010’s earnings.

VoIP is indeed making a name for itself, but legacy technologies are expected to remain right up there with it for the next few years. T1 lines are the most popular means of connectivity for trunking services – and that’s not expected to change any time soon, with it still expected to be heavily relied on through 2014. At the same time though, nearly half plan on making the switch over to SIP trunking solutions sometime within the next two years.

With ease of use and management in mind, VoIP services seem like an overall more practical platform for enterprise communication needs. Nonetheless, the transition from conventional legacy services to a more up to date solution will by no means happen overnight.
