Committee Charged with Investigating VoIP in Bangladesh Expected to Have Report by End of Month

The government of Bangladesh is apparently investigating mobile companies as complaints surfaced for improper terminations of worldwide calls, according to news reports.

Monirul Alam, a member of the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, told bdnews24.com a report will be given to government officials by the end of the month.

“For the next 15 days, we will investigate mobile operators and other companies for illegal international call terminations,” Alam was quoted by the online news service.

Among the nation’s private telecom operators are: Grameenphone, Robi, Airtel (News - Alert), Citycell and Banglalink, according to bdnews24.com. Teletalk is owned by the government.

Officials would not say if evidence was gathered on Teletalk or BTCL, another state-owned company, bdnews24.com said. Instead, they remarked it was a continuing investigation.

To investigate the allegations, last month the Bangladesh telecom ministry created a committee with six members. It is charged with looking into possibly illegal VoIPs and possible lower levels of international calls via BTCL, according to bdnews24.com. The committee has asked for two extensions to submit its findings. “Some international gateways are using very advanced technology, so it's very difficult to prove charges against them,” said Alam.

In other recent news about the Bangladesh's regulatory commission, TMCnet reported the regulator announced six licenses made to companies to build and operate international terrestrial cables. The cables will back up a single undersea cable. In that way, the nation will try to guarantee there are no interruptions to Internet-based services, TMCnet added. The terrestrial cables will begin offering service in some six months, TMCnet reported.

The names of the six companies selected for the licenses are: Novocom Ltd, Asis (News - Alert)-AHL JV, BD Link Communication Ltd, Mango Teleservices Ltd, Summit Communications Ltd and Fibre@home Ltd, according to the TMCnet report.
