UC Edition VoIP Phones are a Step Ahead of Others

By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

VoIP maker, snom technology AG (News - Alert), has readied UC edition phones that are compatible with Microsoft Lync Server 2010 enterprise voice.

In a company blog post, the VoIp maker claimed that snom UC edition phones are “one step beyond” other endpoints on the market compatible with Microsoft (News - Alert) Lync server 2010.

To support its claim, and help VARs understand the product, the company has created a series of videos that explains snom’s UC’s unique features to its customers. See Episode One below.

For example, as per the description provided by the blog, snom UC edition phone users can check their colleagues’ availability with a simple touch of a button or easily change their presence status directly on their snom UC edition phone. Likewise, it can easily and quickly transfer calls, and allows callers to hear music when they are on hold.

However, other vendors’ Lync phones reportedly do not support music on hold.

According to snom technology, Lync combines the telephony features of a traditional IP PBX (News - Alert) with IM and conferencing to improve communication and lower costs.

Initially, there were three Lync-qualified UC models to address a range of business needs. While snom 300 UC edition is an entry-level phone that is simple to use with basic features, snom 370 is tailored for receptionists or anyone who frequently transfers calls.

The blog post indicates that snom 300 is aimed at lobbies, hallways, closets and cafeterias where a lot of UC functionality is not required. And snom 370 UC edition offers expanded memory capacity to show the status of contacts (e.g., busy, online, offline).

Likewise, snom 821 UC edition is for information workers who need a phone with color display and advanced presence features integrated with call history and contact lists.

Finally, the company offers Lync-optimized snom UC600, a USB phone peripheral device that functions as a handset attached to a PC. Basically, the UC600 lets you use a familiar traditional type phone and handset for the audio input/output, while calls are actually handled by the attached PC on which the Microsoft Lync 2010 client application is installed.

snom is a GOLD sponsor of ITEXPO West 2012. To be held Oct. 2-5 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX, ITEXPO (News - Alert) is the premiere communications and technology event. Visit snom in booth #921. For more information on ITEXPO click here.
