Social Media Subject of Telehouse's Latest Bootcamp Event

By Carrie Schmelkin, TMCnet Web Editor

Social media, Twitter (News - Alert), Facebook and YouTube were just a few of the hottest industry terms that were thrown around at Telehouse’s latest Bootcamp event, held June 22.

Each month, colocation leader Telehouse offers events or webinars. Last month, the company hosted its first Bootcamp event of 2011 at its new Chelsea Data Center located at 85 10th Avenue, featuring industry experts who touched on hot topics ranging from implementing cloud computing, to social media strategies, to the increasing demand for modular data centers to the growing trends in server architecture.

Ilissa Miller, managing partner at Jaymie Scotto and Associates, contributed to Telehouse’s Bootcamp with her presentation entitled “Social Media for Telecom,” which detailed what companies should consider when implementing a social media strategy. Social media, as defined by Miller, is “media for social interaction; using web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue.” Miller’s presentation highlighted a niche plan for implementing social media communications for a B2B business.

Her presentation discussed all the different social media sites, such as YouTube, Flickr, LinkedIn, Facebook (News - Alert) and Twitter, and explained how they are each used by the B2B world, from creating events, to spreading the word about promotions, to making presentations available to soliciting input from customers.

The talk also shared some helpful social media tips including the fact that: your competitors are watching you; you get to see who’s following you; and if you don’t talk about it, they will. Some other key tips included how to choose the right social media site for your business; how to plan, manage and distribute your communications using platforms like Tweet Deck and LinkedIn (News - Alert); how to be aware of your competitors; and how to leverage opportunities from these free platforms.

Miller didn’t fail to also answer questions about the confusing world of Twitter and how it can apply to the B2B space. Most importantly, its allows you to get short messages out there quickly and to the masses.

So who should use social media? Everyone from marketers to sales officials to executives to HR officials to product managers, according to Miller.
