Marvell Announces Mass Production of Prestera CX Family of Packet Processors

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

Marvell – a provider of integrated silicon solutions -- has announced the mass production of its Prestera CX family of packet processors for broadband switching and data centers.

CX family offers up to 48 ports of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) on a single chip, and features multiple ports of 40GbE with line rate throughput. Company officials said that these packet processors provide 480Gbps full duplex throughput for Carrier Ethernet, including Mac-in-Mac, multiprotocol label switching (MPLS), virtual local area network (VLAN) translation and IP routing.

In addition, these packet processors can support up to 128,000 subscribers with a single device to meet the growth of Internet traffic and massive deployments of high speed optical broadband networks.

Company officials said that Prestera CX family’s reduced XAUI (RXAUI) interface allows for doubling of the switching capacity for current broadband access platforms. In addition, it also maintains compatibility for legacy line cards, allowing in-field upgrade of access platforms as networks migrate to GPON and 10G EPON.

And for Converged Enhanced Ethernet networks in next-generation datacenter deployments, the Prestera CX family offers a differentiated feature set that includes 40GbE ports, priority flow control and fiber channel over Ethernet capabilities including fiber channel awareness and fiber channel forwarding.

The hardware and software solutions that are based on the Prestera CX family are now available from several equipment manufacturers and ODMs in the Marvell switching ecosystem, including Accton, Aricent, Interface Masters (News - Alert), System Fabric Works, Vadatech and more.

Enco Liew, vice president of sales at Accton Technology, said that Accton is making available to its OEM customers a 48-port 10GbE top-of-rack switch based on the Marvell (News - Alert) Prestera 98XC8248, with critical CEE features required for consolidated data center networking.

“We chose Marvell's Prestera CX as the foundation of our new Niagara 2924 L2-L4 switching product to significantly improve server efficiency, packet processing, power utilization, and data transfer speeds for our customers by leveraging its extensive feature set,” said Ben Askarinam, founder and CEO at Interface Masters Technologies.

C.P. Murali, senior vice president, OEM Strategic Business Unit, Aricent (News - Alert), said that the company is making available its advanced ISS for the Marvell Prestera CX family, including high-performance layer2 switching, layer3 routing and a full complement of Metro Ethernet and datacenter features.

“The Prestera CX based switches provided the right density, low power, port configurations of 10 GbE and 40 GbE combined with the support of the IEEE (News - Alert)'s datacenter, bridging emerging standards to meet the feature and performance requirements for applications such as fast trading, market data distribution, and more,” said Bill Boas vice president of business development at System Fabric Works

Saeed Karamooz, CEO at Vadatech, said that the company selected the Prestera CX8248 from Marvell for its next generation AdvancedTCA (News - Alert) (ATCA) family of products. “Its high integration and low power enabled us to provide all the base and fabric channels as well as a number of ingress ports and put down an additional advanced mezzanine module on the switch board while meeting all the telecommunications clock requirements.”
