Metaswitch Networks Picked by RCN for IP Voice Rollout

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

Metaswitch Networks this week announced that all-digital broadband services provider RCN (News - Alert) Corp. will upgrade its entire voice network to provide a broad range of IP telephony applications and services with Metaswitch equipment.

A carrier systems and communications software products and services, Metaswitch was selected for the legacy switch migration and rollout of IP-based services, which will allow RCN to reduce costs and operational complexity and to provide enhanced products across its customer base, according to both companies.

RCN said in a press statement that Metaswitch’s successful track record of managing complex network migrations and the demonstrated competence of its professional services team will help RCN to deliver on its vision to provide cutting edge, converged services.

“We need to continue to invest in our voice network to stay ahead of the competition,” said Rick Swiderski, vice president of Engineering for RCN, in a press statement. “After an in-depth selection process, we identified MetaSphere as the strongest IP voice platform, based on its advanced features, flexibility, and powerful, easy-to-use network management tools. It will enable us to deliver the absolute best quality of experience to our customers.”

The Metaswitch distributed architecture will help RCN launch dynamic product and service offerings quickly and efficiently. RCN will offer SIP-based hosted UC services for businesses, as well as a consumer VoIP solution for residential customers.

“RCN is widely recognized as a technology leader among the largest cable operators,” said John Lazar (News - Alert), CEO of Metaswitch, in a press statement. “They demand product reliability, innovation and first class support from their vendors, and we are committed to helping RCN achieve their goals.”

Last week the advanced carrier services provider unveiled an enhanced version of its signature MetaSphere platform at SUPERCOMM 2009 in Chicago.

MetaSphere now combines a complete range of consumer calling features, compelling advanced applications and a full suite of business-communication services onto a single, SIP-based system. The MetaSphere application server now includes a PSTN Emulation Server for full legacy feature equivalence, which resolves many corner cases experienced when attempting to recreate plain old telephony services in IP environments. The MetaSphere platform can also now be deployed in conjunction with a third-party IMS core.
