VoIP now comes to the rescue of school children who are facing a new crisis – security in school. Portage la Prairie School Division in Canada recently implemented VoIP and associated services like IP intercom, DID and VoIP systems to ensure the safety of children in two of its schools.
The VoIP system has been installed to replace the traditional intercom systems. Within a short period since its installation, the school system has realized savings of $130,000, according to a report from Portage Daily Graphic. Inspired by this, the school is planning to phase out all traditional intercom systems and replace them with VoIP system instead.
According to myvoipprovider.com, the benefits of IP intercom and VoIP are many. Since the service is delivered via Internet, and not through traditional PSTN, the service offers immense flexibility. It is scalable too. Users can add or subtract extensions whenever they want.
The cost of implementing VoIP is much less than that required for traditional phone system. The Portage la Prairie schools found out that it would cost $160,000 to repair or replace the intercom system in two schools and just $30,000 to set up VoIP service instead.
The school system used these phone extensions to each classroom’s telephone, just as desk telephones are set up in an office. With VoIP service, internal calls within the school are free and unlimited. If other schools in the division have the same VoIP provider, they can call one another free of cost regardless of the distance and duration of the call as all VoIP to VoIP calls are free.
VoIP also offers several other benefits. For example, some of the top VoIP providers offer services such as Group Paging at no extra cost. Group Paging lets a user preprogram a set of numbers, and then dial one extension to reach all of those numbers at once.
Other services offered as part of VoIP include complimentary voicemail to e-mail option that sends an mp3 of a voicemail directly to the user’s e-mail address. This decreases the likelihood of missed voice messages.
IP paging is another important benefit of VoIP systems. For school services not ready to ditch traditional analog intercom systems, some VoIP providers offer digital intercoms. These IP paging systems are more flexible and affordable to install.
