Philips Works in Concert with Consumers to Promote Environment Awareness

By Erik Linask
Group Editorial Director

Though it has been promoted as a key issue for years, global warming and other environmental concerns are increasingly becoming a primary focus for many businesses as they seek to curb their energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions, and other environmentally unsafe factors. Many, in fact, are taking this challenge to a new level as they address this growing global concern by promoting energy efficient “Green Technology.”

Royal Philips Electronics — better known to most simply as Philips — is doing its share. Hoping to leverage its brand and its expertise in electronics and lighting products, it has announced its global campaign to increase energy awareness within the global consumer community. As part of the program, Philips is also hoping to educate consumers that energy conservation does not have to be difficult; nor does it require sacrificing quality of life. Instead, energy savings can be initiated easily and with long-lasting beneficial effects.

Philips’ asimpleswitch.com program      seeks to convince more than two billion people to take simple, inexpensive measures to help conserve energy — like switching out existing light bulbs for higher efficiency ones. Philips has partnered with The Alliance for Climate Protection and the Live Earth concerts for this endeavor. The Live Earth (News - Alert) concert series is a 24-hour series of concerts taking place on Saturday, July 7th and will include more than 100 artists on seven continents. Labeled “The Concerts for a Climate in Crisis,” the Live Earth shows hope to prompt a worldwide movement to help solve global warming.

Consumers attending the Live Earth concerts will be invited to record a personal “simple switch” pledge, which they can do on the Live Earth, MSN, or Philips Web sites. In doing so, participants will vow to replace switch to more energy efficient lighting solutions than those they currently use. Philips will track the pledges and calculate the projected energy and cost savings, which will be reported on the program’s Web site.

Asimpleswitch.com is Philips’ latest attempt at increasing environmental awareness across the globe. Since it first introduced the first energy saving light bulb back in 1980, Philips has introduced more than 200 “green” products. Philips green focus today includes energy efficiency, reduced packaging, minimized use of hazardous substances, reduced weight, recycling and disposal, and lifetime reliability.

“Our asimpleswitch.com program provides the perfect forum to show solutions for efficient energy use and the simple steps that we all can take in order to make a real difference” said Theo van Deursen, member of the Board of Management of Royal Philips Electronics and CEO of Philips Lighting.

In addition to its light bulbs, Philips green products include its line of LCD TVs that reduce energy consumption by as much as one-third over competing products and a home theater that uses half the energy of competitor’s offerings, as well as energy efficient portable media players. For the medical industry, Philips has created MRI scanners and SPECT cameras reduce energy consumption by as much as 40 percent.

To further emphasize its focus on environmental health, Philips has created a green logo, which lets consumers to easily identify products that have significantly better energy efficiency than other competing products.

“At Philips we believe in providing simple solutions for complex problems such as sustainable development,” said van Deursen. “We believe it is time to act now for everyone, and that’s why we offer consumers a wider choice of energy efficient products.”
