Eaton Rolls Out New Powerware BladeUPS Maintenance Bypass Cabinet

Eaton (News - Alert) Corporation, a diversified industrial manufacturer, announced the roll-out of its new Powerware BladeUPS Maintenance Bypass Cabinet (MBC). The system integrates power transformation, power distribution and maintenance bypass — all into a single cabinet.

Eaton’s electrical business deals - with electrical systems and components for power quality, distribution and control; hydraulics components, systems and services for industrial and mobile equipment; hydraulics, fuel and pneumatic systems for commercial and military aircraft; intelligent truck drive train systems for safety and fuel economy; and automotive engine air management systems, power train solutions and specialty controls for performance, fuel economy and safety.

The Powerware BladeUPS Maintenance Bypass Cabinet (MBC) is a three-in-one energy efficient cabinet that complements a 60 kVA Powerware BladeUPS parallel system. It is specifically designed and optimized for high-powered blade servers and high-density computing environments. Its unique design facilitates the transfer of power to full system bypass in order to perform - service, testing and maintenance on up to a full rack of Powerware BladeUPS, without interrupting power to the critical load.

“The Maintenance Bypass Cabinet is a logical innovation that demonstrates Eaton’s continued commitment to improving the data center manager’s ability to have effective power distribution capabilities in the data center,” said Imran Ahmad, MBC product manager, Eaton, in the statement.

Ahmad added: “Rather than having a separate power distribution unit (PDU) or step-down transformer, distribution cabinet and bypass cabinet, our data center customers now have the convenience and simplicity of all three functions in one factory-tested box.”

The UPS incorporated in the MBS can be repaired by completely isolating it from utility power and thereby helping the technician to safely perform service operations without voltage’ presence. The integral maintenance bypass is a mechanical way to bypass the internal components of the UPS, while still sending utility power to the load and thereby providing uninterrupted power.

The MBC incorporates a TP-1 transformer to step down utility power from 480V to 208/120V in order to provide electrical isolation and appropriate input voltage for Powerware BladeUPS modules. The TP-1 transformer yields significant savings in utility costs by providing high efficiency even at low loads.

The MBC meets the U.S. Department of Energy standard for the Energy Star program.

Eaton’s MBC features integrated power distribution with two 42-pole Cutler Hammer panel boards for easy installation of additional breakers in the field. Its multi-function design integrates electrical isolation, voltage transformation, electrical distribution and maintenance bypass. This simplifies the data center architecture and thereby conserves floor space when compared with other separate maintenance bypass and power distribution systems.

Eaton’s MBC features free-standing design that harmonizes with other data center equipment. It also facilitates easy installation and use with flexible access and deployment options.
