Telecommunication giants Sprint (News - Alert) and ReCellular have teamed up with voluntary organization KAB (Keep America Beautiful), in an attempt to recycle retired cell phones in celebration of America Recycles Day on November 15.
Together, they will help recycle 130 million cell phones sitting unused in drawers and closets across America.
The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about cell phone recycling and collect retired cell phones to benefit KAB.
ReCellular (News - Alert) Inc. is the world's foremost collector, reseller, and recycler of used cell phones and accessories.
During the course of the campaign, affiliates of KAB will hold events, passing out postage-paid recycling envelopes and collecting retired cell phones.
"The goal of the campaign is to provide a fun way to show people how easy it is to recycle a retired cell phone," said G. Raymond Empson, president of Keep America Beautiful, in a statement.
In the United States, it is estimated that each year more than 130 million cell phones are disposed of, thereby accounting for more than 65,000 tons of wireless waste. And the available supply of unwanted cell phones will continue to increase. So environmentalists are demanding that telcos invent a free solution for recycling cell phones, without harming the climate.
