Wireless Management Report: Mobile Web Traffic to Retailers Surges on Black Friday and Cyber Monday

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

Page views from mobile phones for bestbuy.com, argos.co.uk and other retailers increased dramatically during holiday shopping season kick off, according to newly released data from Novarra.

The Chicago-based provider of mobile Internet product suite for operators and handset manufacturers to create new services and revenue streams reported mobile phone web traffic to retailer and shopping sites increased twelve-fold on Friday and more than doubled on Cyber Monday compared with the pre-holiday shopping season.

One interesting finding is that Black Friday (News - Alert) actually beat Cyber Monday in the United States: Average page view increases via mobile for U.S. retailers were up by 388 percent for retailers tracked on Black Friday but only 160 percent on Cyber Monday.

And in the U.K. -- where Black Friday is not a retail event -- Novarra (News - Alert) reported page views were up a more modest 40 percent on Friday, Nov. 27, and 23 percent on Monday, Nov. 30.

The study’s results are based on a sampling of web traffic through Novarra deployments for a variety of ‘brick and mortar’ retailers in the United States and the U.K., including Abercrombie, Argos, Asos, Best Buy, Curry’s, Debenhams, John Lewis, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Sears, Target, Tesco, Top Shop and Wal-mart, as well as e-tailers Amazon and eBay (News - Alert).

The retailer data was collected from mobile web use provided through Novarra’s Vision mobile browser and mobile Internet and multimedia platform.

“This is further confirmation that consumers increasingly rely on the internet via mobile phones for their daily habits and routines,” said Scott Cotter (News - Alert), senior director of marketing, Novarra. ”For many shoppers, browsing special deals, comparing products, pricing and other information while they are on the run -- even at a retailer’s location, has become second nature.”
